How many of these LEDs will i need to grow 1 or 2 plants?

You'd do better to spend extra $ on something that has more than 2 dedicated spectrums, and also.. make sure the LEDs have higher wattage. Under 1W per bulb is pretty much deemed inefficient. If you wanted to go with one of those.. I'd get 8 of them 9 of them and build a damn octagon around the plant with one on top - about the only way that low of a wattage would truly do you any good. To me, this would be put in the category of something I wouldn't give away as a gift, let alone get for my self to try to grow anything. Hope this helps.

the only led light you should buy is one that has a 3 watt chipset. Meaning each lead light on that panel is 3 watts a piece.

If I were going to DIY it, I'd agree.. nothing less than 3W a piece across the board... perhaps 5 5W UV ones total as well, one in each corner and 1 in the middle.. 120 degree.

Why does it have to be a DIY? Buy a led setup that has a 3 watt chipset. Heres mine...

The setup you had allowed you to hand-pick what you wanted to use? I have extremely high standards for bulb manufacturers, board creation, and mixes.. not to mention that drivers wouldn't be uniform across the board due to the partial mix of 3W vs 5W, and I like to do DIY as well :)
I didn't have say over the bulbs or color set up. It's a mix of blue and red spectrum all 3 watt diodes the light was about $500. If you have the ability to build yourself a panel using 5 watt diodes I would say go for it because your going to be getting like 60% more power over the 3 watt system.

It's in the cards at some point, but won't be soon. I'd love to see a panel of 3W bulbs with a about 5-8 5W UV ones, just to help w/trichome production.. 5-8 shouldn't be that overpowered, but also gives me the ability to write software and adjust the power of each in relation to a computer so I can dial it in as I want across the full spectrum. (Assuming I went 9 spectrum + IR, that is)
