How to trim yellow fan leaves?

Brand new to all of this and seems like more than a few of you are willing to help. So here goes and hopefully i dont sound to stupid....
I know it is ok to trim a fan leaf that has expired (yellow not recieving light)
But where do i take the leaf from. the main stem? the leafs stem or just the leaf? Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Look forward to your reply.

Just pull downward on the leaf and it should come right off. If not, then cut it at the end of the leaf stem where it joins the branch.

you heard the man! i have had real bad expierence trying to "rip". i usually cut them in the middle of the leaf's stem.
