Is there anything to avoid when doing popcorn tek?

I have heard cracked corn and salt are bad. So I just want plain kernels not seeds or seeds or what? I'm going to try dcasing

Get CLEAN kernels - really, if you get bags look into the bags and don't use any that have black mold on any of them - hell, I don't eat popcorn at concessions any more as I think that is aspergillis niger on there.

When you cook - try to get the most water into your corn as you can without bursting the kernel. A few burst kernels will not be a problem but when you burst them you let out some sort of glutenous material that inhibits growth. This is why you should wash your kernels after they have been cooked.

Most important of all - your kernels must be dry on the surface - no drips no drops. I know people who take a cloth to the kernels - don't go that far, maybe lay them out and let them dry for an hour or so before you can or bag them up.

It will be counter intuitive - believe me "how in hell is anything going to grow on this?" but it will work quite well. Also remember that you are simply not going to get all the water you want into the kernels and you will waste the interior - let it go. You going to spawn with it or grow from grain?

Oh wait - you ARE using actual, real honest popcorn right? it makes a huge difference, seed corn, cracked corn, dent corn will not work well except as enrichment for straw.

i was going to go by this tek. They are the ecuador strain. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msUoZPVk-yY
i have a glass container but im now thinking the aluminum wouldnt let any light in the side and might be better. i want to grow right out of the case, this is only my second time, these are my b+ from the first go around pf tek

Want to know what is Bizarre?

All the local grocery stores dont sell brown rice flour anymore

I wonder if popcorn is next

do u know what the difference would be taking it all out of the container vs. leaving it in when fruiting? am i better off directing the growth out of the top by leaving it in the case vs taking it out and having more surface area exposed? will the corn crumble like rye berries or hold strong like my pf jars?

Good choice the equidorians are pretty potent and I would not use aluminum the mycelium somehow eats holes in it I used turkey pans and eventually they eat right thru and Leak then contams can get thru the bottom I liked using the trays from the hydro shop for cloning get a dome and ur set .

do u have any ideas on the in the case vs take it out of the case thing? whats the advantage of growing them just out of the top rather than taking it out of the case and maybe increase the surface area?

more surface area more room to fruit, smaller fruits less surface area less fruits, but bigger ones. i would innoculate a bulk sub like straw with it vs fruit directly fruiting from popcorn but, fruiting from popcorn can work just as well.

Poly is right but substrate depth Will make a big diff when comes to size of the shrooms and eq's get huge I have gotten some monsters out of bulk subs . Deeper ur substrate the bigger the shrooms will grow . Damn I better stay away from this section of the forum or I might find myself doing a few tubs lol.

thanks for the clarity on the depth question, that seems to make sense, but i was also wondering if the same amount of mycelium would produce different total weight amounts depending on the shape, like short and fat vs long and thin case shape??? also what if i just add some horse shit to my corn and do like a one step bulk type thing thats just sterile the whole time? this seems like it would make sense unless i was inoculating my whole backyard or something and had too much of an amount of material to pressure cook?

i found the popcorn im going to use... i like the stop and shop isle "POPCORN/NUTS" i have been the stoner in housewares now im the nut in the popcorn isle!!

any plain popcorn will work for the most part. smaller kernels are better, i use organic popcorn for this reason.

and if your going to spawn to bulk you dont need to be as sterile, just clean, and pasturized, it may seem like a step more and its not that far off from doing big things like a yard but a tub full of substrate will produce more and bigger fruits than just off popcorn.

as to your question, thats where experimenting comes in, right now i am doing straw cakes that are in the shape of a cigar, rolled in foil. they will be layed flat on the foil for fruiting like a cake.

im thinking i will have a casing of corn, hopefully poop, and verm. its only my 2nd go ahead and i dont have everything but this is gonna be a poopcorn equador shroomscore! i am still curious why u wouldnt inoculate a huge thing in 1 step? im guessing its because mycelium that is spawned to bulk will spread faster since its already established? but wouldnt it get going once it got going in a 1 step package?

i found this about verm,

There are two interesting things about vermiculite which make the mineral desirable to manufacturers. The first is its physical structure, which takes the form of crystalline layers likemica. The second is the water trapped inside the vermiculite. If the mineral is heated, the water turns to steam, forcing the mineral to expand, and the layers fold out like an accordion, creating strands of very lightweight, porous material. When vermiculite is used, it is usually heated to expand it, in a process known as exfoliation.

why not do it on one step? because sterile materiel is prone to get contaminated, especially if you where have to wait a month for full colonization. at the time of fruiting you would undoutably get some contamination within the first few flushes.

when you spawn you have less chances of contamination, because you are working with less sterile substrate, only the corn should have been sterile and it is now covered in fully established mycelium to be further covered by bulk substrate and casing. and also when you pasteurize you leave a lot of the beneficial Bacteria that help resist germination of spores but dont resist the growth of the mycelium. and often help it producing enzymes and nutrients.
