Is this a stupid idea?>

would inserting an air pump tube into the bottom of a pot with soil increase oxygen to the roots? would this mean better growth?

i dunno im high and i just thought of it.:blsmoke:

why not? air is blowing out it won't clog. it will blow thru the soil. as it does the soil will act as an air stone and spread the air out. don't make me go do it.:mrgreen:

Sounds like a potential fire hazard. What if you overworked that pump b/c air can't flow out of the stone once the soil gets packed into it? :-?

Idk though, try it and let us know.

Yea I figured you'd be using lots of perlite. That will help, but for the cheap growers who use crap soil I would be concerned. Sounds like a good idea though. I may have to try it some time.

If you look through natmoon's link -- he uses a sponge towards the bottom which he puts the air tubes in - you really ought to check it out - it is kind of neat.

Someone so cheap as to use crap soil likely wont be spending money on air pumps and hoses. Someone doing that would obviously have their priorities out of order.:-?

good point - but they might have some old aquarium equipment laying around and want to use.

I have some fish tank air pumps. I will put the airstone into my water buckets and pump some air into the warter before I use it. I dont know if it helps any. Natmoon does good work!

yes, natmoon does indeed do good work and he isn't afraid to experiment either. I think oxygenating your water buckets is a great idea and i'm pretty sure it helps in a number of ways including adding more oxygen and preventing algae from forming for starters.

I only water from a misting spray bottle that I shake vigorously before watering. That way I know that the water is aerated as well as I can reasonably expect. I also water using water from my fish tank, when I'm not feeding. That way the water has already been continuously aerated, is well filtered, is pH balanced, and also contains beneficial things like fish poop and trace levels of nitrites, nitrates, and ammonia. ;) Seems to work well enough. Or at least, I've never really had issues with root rot. I, too, use copious amounts of pearlite in my soil mixes.

Nah, those little fish tank pumps are just a rubber diaphragm. They will just fatigue and rip. The motor won't get over worked.
