Led light controller inrush

Hello all,

I have a titan helios 12 light controller which is wired up to a double pole 80amp breaker and correct gauge wire. My question is I am running the kingbrite 480w which comes with the HLG-480H-48 and notes that the cold start is 35amps. When powering up say 8-10 of these drivers/lights will the inrush current cause a problem with the breaker? I am assuming no as the breakers can withstand a quick influx of power before tripping. Any experience/thoughts?

Thank you.

That's simply not true... There's plenty of users here with multiple drivers of all sizes on breakers as small as 15/20A.

@Airwalker16 im going to have to agree with you as well and pretty sure the breakers can handle up to 10x inrush prior to tripping. There Is a slight delay.

@Bignutes would that be required for every driver? Do you have a link to such just Incase? Thanks.

I just looked at the spec sheet and it does list a 35A inrush from cold start, but inrush currents usually only last for a couple of ms, so I doubt that 35A inrush would even trip a 15A breaker.

@TreeFarmerCharlie I got the 12 light helios controller and on an 80amp breaker...what I'm not able to find is the inrush is a couple ms on the driver but how many ms on a breaker before it trips from an in-rush. For instance if I have 10 drivers cold starting at 350amps does the breaker support the inrush time wise ya know.

I'm unfamiliar with that controller, but it looks like it only permits you to control the on/off times for two "banks" of outlets. Is that the case? If I was running 8-10 of those I would want to be able to at least stagger their on times to prevent a huge inrush.

My guess would be that this is dependent on the specifications of your particular breaker. I program control systems for a living and, when I have to manage high current amplifiers, or lighting circuits, I always stagger the startup of all those devices by close to a second to prevent any negative effects caused by inrush.

@TreeFarmerCharlie well then I should've noted that yes each set of banks with trigger cords could be set on a timer and or plugged in one at a time and should help. But still was wondering what the timing is on a breaker and how much of inrushes they can handle prior to say "no charlie no and popping" :)

Square D QO double pole 80AMP says 10000AIR on it. Supposedly this high up on amperage square D QO they come in high magnetic but cannot find exact timings and stuff. Maybe over thinking this and everything will be fine. Just got a little curious this morning.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the actual pecs for that breaker is, but the datasheet I found for their "QO" series breakers says they are designed for high inrush situations.

You mention a double pole breaker, so that's 240VAC ?

FWIW, The HLG-480 datasheet says "2unit(circuit breaker of type B) / 3units(circuit breaker of type C) at 230VAC"

Start here, but I'd just stagger them for simplicity instead of the thermister. Also depends too what other shit you have on circuit.
