Sorry to butt in, what would be the recommended dryness of the material before you run it? Is it OK to use fresh dried buds, not cured? Will that affect taste or potency?
The best result would probably be from cured. But absolutely you can use fresh dried buds. Some people even prefer it. But personally I've only ever done from cure so I have not tested the difference.

If you have fresh buds. DO NOT DRY THEM.
That's is the best time to make bho. It's called live resin (some people say u can't make it unless u have a special freezer but I make it all the time in my freezer and it comes out A++ grade, top shelf no argument everytime and people say it's live resin until I tell them I used a normal freezer. So if you ask me you can make live with any freezer really. You can use a tube, I assume you don't have a closed loop? you can do it with a jar and get wonderful results if your willing to take that risk. (It seems ghetto but it's actually a lot better than using a real tube)
Keep it wet just freeze it. Cut it of the plant and trim it up on your way over to the freezer. Be quick, I attached some pics of what u can make

You can run fresh cut and frozen material, but we typically extract at about 25% water content, so as to limit water, while holding on to monoterpenes.

Wow that oil looks so nice! So freeze the fuck out of it when fresh, then extract. I was thinking of using a glass tube and blasting the ol fashion way (no closed loop). How would you go about with the jar method? Any links? I appreciate the info thanks!

That's makes sense, how do you figure out the water content in the buds? Thank you

Weigh a sample before and after desiccating, if you wish to be precise.

That is pretty close to where the small stems snap after hanging a week or so in a cure cabinet, so we typically just estimate by touch and feel.

I have a bachelor's degree in chemistry... you fucking ass wipe. I do this for living.
This is the FIRST time I have EVER had this happen to me. I was not being careful bc I'd done it hundreds of times and began to stop worrying about it. I was telling a story for safety purposes. Don't assume I don't know what I'm doing when I've taken organic chemistry courses on how this fucking works down to the science.
Bud I'm just going to go out on a limb here that if your place of work knew that you did this and how you handled it, you probably wouldn't be working in a lab so much as you would a desk. Labs are required to have safety procedures followed to the bullet and seeing how you missed how butane is so flammable, I doubt your coworkers who work Alongside you would want you near a flame, ( hypothetically if they knew about this). Make a damn list of guidelines to help you make sure you're ready so you're not doing this where you're not supposed to. Like Fucking INDOORS. A kitchen vent is not a lab vent, this shit doesn't exactly push it outside so much as it just disperses it in the room. You're lucky you still have eyelids. Bachelor degree or not, it isn't a PHD by a Damn sight so don't fucking consider yourself an expert just because you've done it so many times. Caution to the wind to anyone who sees this man drop butane in a dish, you've been warned.

Lol no I've got my own house.
Here's a link, I suggest you read it. Everything should be checked off from light switches to pilot lights to your clothes(static cling) yeah static will ignite butane as it will ignite gasoline vapors. http://www.onlinepot.org/hash/makehoneyoilsafely.htm

Another piece of advice: giving advice or your stories like this makes me want to take you out to a tree, hang you by your wrists and beat you with the tube you blasted from after your fuck up. People take this kind of stupid advice from people who fail and those failures become fatalities.
It's not funny. Shame on you for ever telling a story like this because you think your advice is going to make people trust you but as you can see at least 2-3 people won't because of your mistakes. I know I wouldn't. You keep blasting all you want but spread shit like this and fucked Up shit happens. People learn from mistakes but they can watch that on YouTube but you probably did the same and ignored some simple common sense safety. I

I think he was trying to teach us that butane is flammable. And he gave the OP incorrect info before ruining his post. Clearly he doesn't do this for a living if he thinks the color is all in the weed, it also sounded like he purged on stove top.

But let's get back to the original question..
What tricks can be done to help this person get lighter colored oil?
It would help if you told us what you are current method is.
It's mostly all in the PREPARATION if you ask me.
Anyway we could chat?

I VISUALLY SAW THE FLAME FROM THE BURNER IGNITE A PATH OF GASEOUS BUTANE ALL THE WAY TO THE SHALLOW LAYER OF BUTANE LEFT IN THE PAN LIKE 6 OR 7 FEET FROM THE BURNER.
Although im a solventless guy, this is actually really really useful. Thanks for sharing man i would think 6 or 7 feet away is far enough, ill tell my BHO buddies

You can extract any time from fresh off the plant, to dried and cured. We extract most of ours after hanging long enough for the small stems to snap.

To name a few:

Fresher material. Some constituents like anthrocyanin pigments darken as they age.
Early harvest. Clear trichomes produce a lighter extract than do amber trichomes.
Sativas typically lighter than Indicas
Higher ratio of Propane to Butane to limit longer chain molecules.
Sub zero extractions to limit longer chain molecules
Flood rather than soak.
Recover to high vacuum so as to produce cotton candy, which purges the raw oleoresin in bubble thin films.
Fast short final purge in vac oven in a thin film at <115F at -29.5" Hg, so as to not caramelize plant sugars
How early of a harvest are we talking like a few days or a week? Does this affect yield in a dramatic way?

Early would typically be when the trichomes are still mostly clear and timing depends on strain and growing conditions. Typically weeks to move from clear, through cloudy, to amber.
