Spent the day doing what I love best; smokin' 'n' creatin'.:bigjoint:

Made this dinky neck knife

BushcraftKnifes (1).jpg

Well, I say it's a neck knife, but until I've made the sheath I guess it's just a little knife ;)

Ox horn slab, brass rivets, O1 tool steel, belt sander and angle grinder... and off I went!
It's the first one I've made but the main reason I'm so pleased with it, to be honest, is because nothing went wrong, got broken, or lost, I didn't run out of anything, need some tool I never had etc etc. Just one of those jobs that bumped along merrily. :)
So much so, I made a good start on a couple more;

:eyesmoke: Anyways, thought I might get a nice response/critique from those of us who've had a toke today? :eyesmoke:

Thanks Bakatare! That's the best thing I can hear, as the idea is to make them to sell in the future...
Nice one!

Nicely done Sir.

I appreciate a good knife, my old man taught me to never leave the house without a good pocket knife on me and I don't. :-P

Peace

Nice! I have made a few carving handles for my carving knives but never tried metal work.. how long did it take?

If I had the tools and materials in front of me, I reckon on an hour...two at a smokin' pace ;)

I've yet to sharpen it though, which is going to take a while...
At least it will when I can afford to buy a whetstone :)

I use a few of the diamond stones to sharpen.. (nothing but leatherstrops for my flexcuts knives) but I will sharpen the other knives with the diamonds..

I had to choose between a combi Japanese waterstone, or a set of diamond stones.
Since I know nothing about either of them I went for the waterstones, purely because I'll usually like the more traditional side of things...in life generally.;)

(I'm well pleased having found a little creative something to crack on with...it's done some work in chasing the blues away..The herb, and something to make with my hands=Life's diazepam! :))

really kinda depends on the steel for me.. the flexcut uses a high carbon steel and it holds the edge enuf to only need a strop.. the 420 stuff I have needs the diamonds once they dull up a bit.. they can take more abuse..

did you forge these or?

I was just thinking this morning how I need a forge to do "proper" knives.
I bought a length of tool steel off Ebay and ground the shape out to do this one...

save yourself the time... unless you want another hobby.. there are plenty of good pieces of steel out there already if you know what type of steel you like.

I spent too much money on crappy ass knives and finally found the steels I like and the blade I like to use for wood carving.. and then I spent even more on that crap too... lol I have the entire flexcut carving set and knives... but.. I wont ever need another set..

If you stick to making knives check out the Burr King line of belt grinders. Attachments available include an undersized wheel for hollow grinding and a platen to guarantee level.
