MH and HPS bulbs does more $$ = more bud?

Just wondering about the different light bulb brands out there. I have a 400w fixture and I used the HPS bulb that came with the unit for flowering, it doesnt have a name on it, just say HU400. I am sure its the cheapest 400HPS bulb u can get......as it was included with the fixture. I used a 400w MH for Veg that I purchased at my local Hardware store.

Does it make a diffence buying a more expensive (Name brand) bulb? If so what brand should I look for and why are they better?

Getting ready to start another grow and just wondering if I should replace the bulbs from my first grow with those of a higher quality.

Thanks: stlmatt

Some bulbs manufacturers will provide a graph that shows the spectrum of light produced by the bulb, and also one for the plant response spectrum. The closer the match the better the growth.

I've noticed big differences in MH bulbs, but not as much in HPS bulbs.
I strongly recommend the Hortilux BLUE MH bulb, because it matches the plant's response curve better, and I have seen much better growth:

This is the Hortilux MH Blue spectrum:

This fills in the plants needs way better, especially in the blue spectrum which mimics natural light in the spring (Vegetative Growth)

I can guarantee better results with the MH Blue, especially compared to a hardware store bulb.

i use a cheapie GE bulb for veg, because its all thats really required. for flower its big ballin eye hortilux enhanced all the way.

don't run MH they are 2 times as expensive last half as long and you'll get better results with just a hortillux or ushio hps than if you were to veg with mh and flower with hps.

well more $ is never = more bud! more knowledge=more bud. you should know what the light spectrum is. i have actuallly noticed a big difference in growth between 2 similar priced HPS with different spectrums...

this is off the subject but I couldn't find a thread or nor did i want to start one... does anyone know if an HPS gives off carbon monoxide if it's cracked or leaking? I was running a T5 and switched over to a HPS, shortly after the carbon monoxide sensors in my grow started going crazy? any ideas or do you think its coming from a different source?

I know that more lumens = more light, and more light = more growth usually.

Take a look at the lumen counts and spectrum graphs for each bulb.

For instance, a standard $20 400w HPS bulb has about 50,000 initial lumens. But a Hortilux 400w has 55,000... and a 430w Hortilux has 58,500, But those hortilux's are pricy...the best value ive seen is with the Sylvania Gro-Lux...at 58,000 lumens, and only about $75, it seems to be the best lumen/$ ratio...but ive never used one so i dont know how reliable they are, or what results they produce. All i see is statistics and dollar signs.

If you were using an electronic/digital ballast with that HPS, the RF frequency they emit might've affected said monitors.

cool! thanks for the tip, I was worried for a minute there... trying to take all the safety precautions to ensure a safe grow... I relocated the sensors and they seem to be doing fine.

WOW, thats expensive. Thats for a 400 watt? The hydro shop in the area sells 1000 watt hortilux bulbs for $119.99, I get'em online for $69.99. If you buy the case they are $64.99/bulb.
