Hello all! My names n0z. Im extremely new as this is my 1st grow. I have not started yet because i want to make sure my enviroment is suitable before my attempt. I have gathered most needed materials. First, let me explain my intentions.. I plan to grow one plant and clone it. Im starting with feminized seeds (OG Kush). On Fox Farm soil With Fox Farm Soil Nutes Trio. Im growing in a tote (turned it vertical) with one 3inx3in fan screwed in the side and 4 23w CFL lights hanging and 2 more one on each side at bottom of plant. I'v made everything entirely myself even spliced the wires. I have a couple questions hopefully someone has some incite.
1. i plan to grow seedling in 1 gal then transfer to 2 gal or does it have to be a 5gal?
2. is one small fan enough to keep it vented? should i carve a hole at top of tote to let out heat?
3. do i need a pump or can i water by hand?
4. what do i used under pot to collect runs for ph testing?
5. what can i cover the large opening to the tote with? I plan on using mylar and a dark colored blanket over that..
6. would it better to buy different bulbs for veggin and flowering or would it be worse?
7. i also bought perlite, do i mix with soil or put a layer on top or bottom?
8. how important is a reflector over top the overhead lights?
9. are my spliced wires dangerous if so exactly how dangerous? lol :P
Fan.jpghere you can see the black square which is the fan and top right hole for cords
Lights.jpgthat wood at bottom will be covered in mylar but its to give a flat surface to grow on, those are 4 sockets for overhead have another socket for bottom of plant
Splicing.jpgspliced and tied wires to bulb and fan will be covering with electric tape

Please note i have just started building my grow tent and its my 1st, nothing is covered but the whole tote will be covered with mylar.

How about skipping the idea of wiring the socket you currently have and get a regular small lamp. Then get a 4-socket adapter and a light socket extension adapter. Enter the extension into the lamp and plug the 4-socket adapter in the extender. Screw in your CFL bulbs.

Joila...you have a 4-CFL lamp with no hassle and no safety concerns!!

1. i plan to grow seedling in 1 gal then transfer to 2 gal or does it have to be a 5gal?
You want to transfer gradually. Start small and let the plant's roots fill each container then plant up. Many start with Dixie cups, then 1-gallon, then
up to 3+ etc.
Or you can start in the final container but then you'll have to be concerned about over/underwatering and over/underfeeding, damp soil, mold due to standing water that can't be absorbed, etc, etc.

2. is one small fan enough to keep it vented? should i carve a hole at top of tote to let out heat?

It depends, what are the CFMs of the fan and what is the square footage of the grow space? Say your space is 3 feet X 3 feet, and 5 feet high. That's 9 square feet and 45 cubic feet. You'd need a fan that has at least 45 CFM. If that isn't ample to move out enough heat to keep your temps in check, you would need to double the CFMs, etc. Until you can move enough air to keep humidity/heat in check.

3. do i need a pump or can i water by hand?

I'd suggest watering by hand until you get that dialed in to prevent under/over-watering

4. what do i used under pot to collect runs for ph testing?

Place a bowl under the pot and catch the first few ounces of water that drips out and test that.

5. what can i cover the large opening to the tote with? I plan on using mylar and a dark colored blanket over that..

Mylar sounds good and will reflect light the plants can use instead of it being lost outside the space.

6. would it better to buy different bulbs for veggin and flowering or would it be worse?

Veg: you want to use mostly bulbs in the 5,000K to 6,500K spectrum. Mix in a few 2,700K as well to keep an "even" spectrum like the sun.
Flower: you want mostly 2,700K with a few 5,000 to 6,500K mixed in. A good ratio is 3:1.

7. i also bought perlite, do i mix with soil or put a layer on top or bottom?

Mix in with the soil. You want it to help with drainage and helping the roots continue to receive oxygen. It helps reduce problems from overwatering also. I find that a mix of 20-30% perlite helps roots to fill the medium very quick. Contributing to quicker and more lush growth on top of the soil/medium, compared to medium without or with little perlite.

8. how important is a reflector over top the overhead lights?

Most. Any light leaking (showing), such as on your ceiling, walls, etc, is light that
isn't getting to your plants. Lost lumens = lost power.

9. are my spliced wires dangerous if so exactly how dangerous? lol :P

Yes! See above.
