Need Help With 9x11 Room Design

I am currently renting a house by myself and have a 9x11 room open that I would like to start growing in. I have had a few successful small closet type grows, but never a whole room. I've done lots of research over the past few years and feel I'm ready to upgrade, however I have a few questions/problems that I want to get tackled first.

I do have a small construction background, and can repair drywall if necessary, but I'd like to repair as little as possible as I am renting the house. This being said, I'm wondering about the exhaust system of the room. It does have one window, but this will be visible to neighbors, so I'd like for it to be light proof. Is an exhaust system necessary only to maintain heat issues, or do I need one to cycle in fresh air? I will be able to leave the door open most of the time, and already have an 8,000 BTU Portable AC Unit.

Another thing I'm wondering about the lighting and electrical issues. What would be an ideal light setup for flowering in the room? I would like to run 2 1000W HPS fixtures, but if 1 pulls 9.5 amps, and the breaker cuts at 15 amps, how would it work? Even if I could run an extension from another breaker, would I still be able to run 2 1000Ws and my fans, AC, etc.? Again, since I'm renting the house, and don't know any electricians I can trust, I probably shouldn't add any breakers/circuits.

Say I can't use the 2 1000s...and I buy 2 600W HPS fixtures, how many plants can I grow in the room to get the biggest yield possible? I'll be growing with soil more than likely btw.

I would just add a breaker and wire outlets. doing this can be non invasive and cause literally zero damage. its simple. I have run extension cords down the hall and that works, just put (1) 1000w on each 15a breaker..... and the AC will probably need to go on a different one as well.

Plant numbers depend on size and technique....... You could use all that light with 2 plants or 200......

Thanks for the quick reply wonder. What about the exhaust? How and where will I run an exhaust out of the room without having to do drywall repair? Will an exhaust still be necessary even if I can control temps without it?

Bump...I've decided to go with 2 600W HPS lights in this 11x9 room. I will have a seperate veg room a little smaller than this one. If I can maintain cool temps with my AC Unit/s and fans, is an exhaust/ventilation system still necessary? If so, how can I outtake the air without having to cut a hole in a wall or ceiling, or using the window in the room? Simple question guys + Rep given for any help.

Apparently it's pointless to try and get some help or advice on these forums...now I see why I left the first time.

Have a little patience homeboy.
Find a 20 amp circuit in that house and you can run a cord to the outlet. Then you can run 3x 600w. Try the washing machine plug.
Exhaust into the attic. Use an 8in. fan with insulated ducting. Keep it as straight as possible. 8in. hole wont be too hard to fix. Put it in the closet ceiling if possible. Easier to hide if your landlord comes for an inspection.
Hang the lights on the 9' wall evenly spaced, 20in. from the wall on center. Should get the best coverage that way. Frame up a scrog for the best yield. With a little practice, 2lbs. should be doable.

lol, sorry I get a little excited when it comes to growing. I appreciate your reply Fred, +++ rep...now that's what I'm looking for. BTW, after reading your post, I went up to check out the closet of the room to see about running the exhaust into the attic from there. Didn't even notice until then, but there's about a 1'x1' removable panel in the closet to get up into the attic/crawlspace. This should be perfect for running my exhaust up there, as I won't have to do any patching to the drywall when I have to leave.

Also, you mentioned framing up a scrog, which I'm interested in...however I've never used this technique and have read very little about it. (Looks like I'll have to do some more research.) Using this basic setup...the 3 600W'ers, scrog, etc., how many total plants would I need to get the most effective yield, and what size pots should I use? Just trying to figure out how many clones I need to get going.

hey thurgood, i have a 10x10 room. running 2 600w cooltubes and they only take up about 1/3 of the room. I have one more 600w I'm going add for the final 2 weeks, so the room will then be half full. but im only talking 18 plants that are 2-3 ft tall. topped all them 2+ times during veg...

600w can light 6 medium-large plants effectively...try to have 100w per plant basically...and use the largest pots possible...i noticed that the one i transplanted a week earlier in a 5 gallon, is almost 2x the size of the others...its crazy what transplanting can do when done at the right time...

That's the same thing that was in my closet. Worked like a charm.
Scrog is pretty easy as long as you only make the screen about 40" wide. That's about as far as most people can reach. Unless you have arms like an orangutan. Do your knuckles drag the ground? Hah! I kill myself!
You can mount a ledger board on the wall and a couple 4"x4"s with 2"x4" stringers to support the outside edge. When I was doing a scrog I used that green nylon webbing that landscapers use. Got it at Lowes outside in the garden center. It's in the back by the paving stones. It was lighter than steel fencing and if a stem started to get too big or get strangled, a quick snip with the scissors and problem solved. Same technique at harvest. This is the exact set up I used to use.
I was doing it with 2x 30 gallon DWC tubs and 12 plants. Don't know what you'll yield in dirt, but I used to get about three lbs. per run with AK47.
With a little research you'll find scrog pretty easy. Labor intensive, but worth it in the end. Besides, the research and experimentation is half the fun!

Hey Jack, thanks for the posts man, very helpful! + rep.

Fred, after doing some more research and from what you have told me, I'm fairly certain I want to try the scrog method and see how it works out. With the 3 600W'ers in the room, I'm thinking maybe 18-20 plants ending up in 5 gal pots by flowering...I'll have to set up my pots in the room and see if it'll fit, but shouldn't be a problem.

About my light reflectors...Should I get air cooled and run my exhaust through my lights or will an 8,000 BTU AC + Exhaust be enough to cool the room? What's the difference between a vertical/horizontal hang socket for the bulb? It looks like some of these vertical hangs would have more of a light footprint/coverage.

18-20 is good for 1800W, but may be tight for scrog. Seems to me 12 would be about right. You can always add more next round. If you start with too many, at about 3-4 weeks into flowering your fucked. Remember, your going to have an extended veg time while you weave them into the screen. A 75% full screen is ready to flip. The stretch will fill in the rest.
With scrog, you're creating a flat level canopy. The reason it's so successful is the even canopy that uses every inch of the light footprint. Therefore a horizontal mounting is best. Vertical will work, just wont be as efficient, especially directly under the bulb.
Air cooled lights in addition to the AC unit will be ideal. Run them on their own fan circuit using clean air from outside the room. Tape the ducts well so there's no interaction with room air. Then you can put the filter over in the corner with the fan on top scrubbing the air. No exhaust is necessary, other than for the lights anyway. Enough fresh air will be sucked in under the door, cracks, etc. to feed enough CO2 to the plants. Maybe down the road you might experiment with CO2 injection. Search Desertrat, he has a great thread on CO2 production with yeast and sugar. A 6in. Vortex should cool the lights easily. plantlightinghydroponics.com: best Vortex prices on the net, by far. Add a dehumidifier and you're in business.
When you run a cord for your lights, make sure the cord can handle 20 amps. They have them at Lowes. Their the ones with the blue stripe. Electricity is nothing to fuck with. Don't burn down the house! I was lucky and the laundry room was on the other side of the wall from the closet in my grow room. A small hole in the wall down low was hidden by the washing machine. Nobody ever knew anything.

I'm wondering if just 2 600's would do the job for 12 plants going scrog. Also I'm confused about the exhaust circuit through my lights...So should I pull air in through my attic hole in the closet, through my lights, and into my room through the filter? Or...Pull from the attic, through lights, through filter, and out of the room? Another problem I'm gonna have is the room is upstairs, and all of my 20 amp breakers are downstairs. I'm not worried about running a cord to another room upstairs though, to another 15. This is why I'm thinking about just 2 lights now for the scrog. How many amps does a 600w pull? 6?

Pull the air for the lights from a window, the hallway, etc. It's a closed circuit and never contacts room air. Send it into the attic. Make sure every joint and elbow is taped tight and no stink can escape. Use as much hard duct as possible to increase efficiency and reduce noise.
A filter in the corner with a fan on top should pull enough air in under the door and when you go in to refresh CO2. Did for me anyway.
Two 600W will cover 40"x80" well enough. Each lamp pulls 5.5 amps. Each 15 amp circuit will handle two lights. Never load a circuit beyond 80% capacity. Did I mention: burn the house down? Surely there's enough circuits up there to run three lights. Don't forget about the light fixtures in the ceiling, they're probably on a 15 amp breaker. You can get these little plugs that screw into the socket. They're not very heavy duty so only use it for one light. Every room upstairs is probably on the same breaker, so remove all the bulbs on that floor just to ensure there's no overload.
You probably have enough circuits up there to run four lights and the AC unit. Put it on the 11' wall. If you're gonna go, go balls out! Of course that will eliminate any TV's or stereos upstairs. Small price for more bud.
Again, be real careful about too many plants under the screen. With three lights and twelve plants, I was at capacity.
Just to make it more difficult for you, I went from the scrog to a four light stadium in that same size room. Yield increased substantially! I'm still running stadiums in two rooms with 3000W each. Best move I ever made. Although after three years of this, I'm wanting to switch to trees in an Undercurrent at the end of November. Right after I come back from the Cup.
Good luck, I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Thanks again for all your help, I'll prob. be starting a new thread once I get everything together this next week or two, and post pics and whatnot as I get things built. I'll make sure and post a link to it in this thread for those that are interested.

Oh yea, anyone happen to know much about Nirvana Seeds? I ordered 2 different Nirvana strains through Attitude : Papaya & AK-48...also got a Dinafem Blue Widow freebie...if anyone knows about these strains and/or how they would do with a scrog let me know about it please. + rep

I think AK 48 is a knockoff of AK 47. I was growing AK47 from Serious in my scrog. AK48 should do just as well.
Always wanted to grow Papaya. It's supposed to get huge, perfect for scrog also.
