Need wiring help.

So I'm going to be hooking up 10 1000watt hps lights to a 12000watt generator soon and need to know how to wire it up to new sockets for all my lights.

Try to make it as basic and in depth as possible as far as equipment goes because, I'm no electrician and I want to do it right.

if you run 10,000 watts on a 12,000 max gen you may have problems. the ballast will protest the hid lights, but if you plug in one incandecent bulb you will see the power pulse when you run near max wattage of the gen. so you may not get the most from your lights.

as for the wiring the easy way is go buy a splitter box that plugs in 220 or 440 plug it to the gen plug lights into that

Um... this is one of those things you read about in the papers and shake you head and say "WTF was that stoner thinking?" when the house catches fire or even worse, you get badly hurt. I am not trying to be rude, but seriously amigo - lets step back and think about this first. 10x 1000 watt lights connected together with a generator running the show? It just screams BAD IDEA!

we run remote sites on gennies. running 2-3 10,000 watt pumps pumping liquid n2 at 2800psi. done right it safe. done wrong its death and/or fire.

run higher rated wire than your gen is rated for. run it as short a run of wire as you can. and never run a gen inside even if you run the exaust outside, you will still get carbonmonoxide build up

let me know what model gen you have and i'll help you all i can

Okay. So for one, I'm going to get the most expensive cables and sockets I can and have read several soundproofing posts for generators. If I need to buy a higher output generator, then I will.

I'm not that stupid XD

Tell me what to do to be as close to fire-proof as possible with the wiring and I'll set it up. My ventilation and heat control is top of the line, so no worries there.

Thanks,

first run ALL wire in conduit make sure everything outside is waterproof, its a good idea for inside too.
don't run electrical on the floor
make sure you have breakers on the gen and the junction box
get a gen that has high heat and low oil shut off
get a few cfls and a computer battery back up. not a ton just enough to keep the room lit if you have gen trouble and keep your girls on day cycle
your ground is important do it right the first time. we use copper coated steel bars pounded 2ft into the ground.
if you are going to put a baffel box around you gen make it bigger than you think you need it will get hot even with good venting
and the obvious don't put flamables near the gen, wood, paper, gas cans. and have a abc fire extinguisher on hand

need any help you can pm me. i'm not an electrician but i've set up generators

Okay, so I did some local generator browsing and found a LIMA 15kW generator which is conveniently run on diesel, has a high reliability rating, doesn't have any exposed laminations or moving parts, is pre-muffled and it'll have 5kW more power than my lights will require.

They're able to run for a little over 30 minutes at up to 125% over maximum capacity.
And I found it for 800 darahs. :)

Opinions?

So just out of curiosity.. Why is diesel more convenient? Thought it was more expensive right now than regular gas. Is generator run ops cheaper than electric? Just curious..

Well (I'm only assuming) I'm pretty sure that I can convert to bio-diesel or even used fry-grease increasing hpg(hours per gallon) and costing me nothing to get for free from the hundreds of local fast food joints that throw it out at the end of each week leaving the work for me being running it through a cheap filter and then it's ready for use.

Diesel is more efficient than regular unleaded, and I think it might be cleaner burning too. Even though it's more expensive, because of it's efficiency, it should actually be cheaper.

grease will lower your hpg bio will give you about the same. some diesel will run grease with no conversion with bio you need to change fuel lines, and will have some trouble with clogged fuel filters at first.

800 sounds good just make sure its not a stolen rental unit. most gen should be run at half load to get best hpg and longest life

btw i run an old benz diesel i can run on grease, best bet for wvo is put a paper coffee filter inside a metal coffee filter. be warned filtering is dirty and takes forever. also lucas fuel injector cleaner at double the rec dosage helps the motor when run on wvo.
