Do you think it will grow 5 plants to their best?

im not a grow prow but if u keep them nice and close it should be alright hopefull a pro will read ur trouble and give u a better answer i use 1000watt mh so im not in the same catigory

Yes you will be fine using just one 400 Watt Lamp for 5 plants.

You will have to crop the top buds when they mature first then allow the bottom of the plant to get the light until they are also mature.

Important get a strain that does not grow too tall you are running only one lamp you will not get enough light on the bottom of the plant.
