I agree with several points here.I think shooting cops is extremely counter productive if we are serious as a country about building a better and more accountable police force.
I understand we need police. I question the idea that they need to be armed at all times. I find it completely unacceptable that they not be held personally liable for what they do- this is a trend that must be reversed in this country, for ALL levels of public service.
I have respect for cops who are doing their job to the best of their ability. I'd respect them even more if they got rid of their own bad apples, because they understand that bad cops make the system more dangerous for them and everyone.
That is one basic tenet of the idea of professionalism itself; that true professionals will work to weed out the incompetent from their own ranks. If police would like to be regarded as professionals, maybe their internal review boards should look less like union grievance committees and more like the enforcement bodies they were created to be.
Cops, being the personality types they are, won't be backing down because people start firing on them. Instead they will dig in their heels and point to it as the reason they have to be the giant assholes they are.
I also agree that most cops should not be armed with lethal weapons. Even the police admit that their training is underwhelming for life and death situations. That is easy to resolve. Have special units that are trained extensively in those regards and your patrol officers can continue going out on calls and dealing with issues. If they need backup, then the gun wielders with the most training arrive to remedy the situation. Give the patrol officers tazors, bean bags, mace, gas, etc. just nothing lethal.
