Question about LED's

I've heard LED's are becoming a popular solution for indoor growing. I'm just wondering if anyone has had any success with them or if it's best to just stick with MH/HPS.

The technology is there. There is an aquarist and he is a marine biologist in my town that is running coral fishtanks strictly with them(corals use photosynthesis just like plants do), he built them from scratch and he is beginning to market them and they are very expensive. The cheapest one he built he put 1000 bucks into for a 35 gallon tank. LEDs are coming, but it will be several years before they are affordable. But nothing out there says a weed wont grow under them now, but the outcome will probably be less than desirable.

there was a guy who did a grow from start to finish with some uber-fancy (expensive) LEDs and the results weren't stunning at all.

I can't remember if it was on this forum or another.

They could possibly be used in a grow but i wouldn't recommend it as the only light source. If energy saving is what you're after, or lights that produce little heat, you're far better off going with CFLs.

LED technology is a few years off matching HPS/MH or even CFLs, from what I've read/seen.
