Quick GenHydro pH Test kit Quesiton

I just purchased a General Hydroponics pH control kit. Total noob question here but I am growing in soil and I'm not totally sure how to use this test kit.

Do I put some soil and some RO water with the drops in the vial? I tried this and recieved a yellow/brown color after the soil matter settled but that could just be my soil coloring the water.

Or do I use the run off? My nutrients are dark in color already so I can't understand how I can get an accurate reading from this test.

Thanks.

OR, is there another way to test my soil that is simple?

I ask because I have a serious problem right now and am fairly certain pH is the issue.

these wont work with your nutes, because theyr dark but the point is to test what your watering with. add some dolomite lime to soil and water it with 6.3-6.8 ph and you should be fine. you can get a soil ph tester

My nutes get a little dark and i use this same kit. Once you have that small of an amount in the little tester it doesnt seem as dark and works for me.
