Quick 'Yes' or 'No' or 'Go away' question

Assuming the 3W diode runs at ~3V, you'd have to run an entire Amp through them to get 3W, which you can do, but is in all likeliness the max load that the diode can handle. It won't live as long and it will be less efficient. I don't know any DIY'er who runs their diodes at max load, let alone a manufacturer, let alone a manufacturer with any sort of warranty.

Ha! What isn't magic? Hell, I think blankets are magic, especially the soft fuzzy ones. Advanced enough technology for me, I guess. :eyesmoke: Science meets Mysticism, though? If that's what you're going for I like it.
Thanks for the reply. So, do you know what duty cycle mfgs usually run at? Do they only push 50% or higher. I expect your answer will be that it depends on the mfg. :-).

On the quote, it's just something I find interesting to speculate about. For example, if you could pop back to the dark ages with a can of gas, a portable generator, a 50" plasma screen and an Xbox, the locals would probably think it magic. Of course, they also would probably burn you at the stake for being a witch ;-). Now picture it's us in the dark ages, what tech lies ahead that we can't even fathom currently? I like the science meets mysticism take too though - thanks.

Ack, sorry for the delayed response, just saw it now. I believe most manufacturers run their stuff at 50-60%. I think you're right on target with your guess. Coming from an efficiency standpoint it makes perfect sense to me. I don't even wanna think about running LED's close to max load w/o a thermoelectric cooling device in the mix which then begs to question why you wouldn't just add more LED's to achieve the increased lumen output that we're after.

On Science meets Mysticism.

And all of this takes places without any cognitive input from you. Friggin' magic...
