Rough start to First Grow

Ok, technically this is my second grow. But my first grow stretched really bad, fell over, and died in about a week.

I'm off to a better start this time, sort of. I am growing a few bag seeds and a few California Orange. They are about 11 days old and were doing great until about 3 days ago. They started to get brown spots on the bottom leaves and a bit of yellowing at the tips (see pics). I thought it was magnesium deficiency due to the water in the reservoir being to hot, but now I am not sure. I was pretty sure they were the walking dead so I unplugged my grow cabinet and left it alone for the night. This morning when I went to clean it out, to my shock, my plants were looking better. Now I am trying to save them.

Here’s all the details (sorry to be windy but I don’t want to miss anything that might lead to the problem):

They were under 24 hour 400w MH lighting about 7 inches away from the tops of the plants, drip water from the top 24 hours with a mist-er on the root side, the air temp was around 76F-80F (24C-27C) and the water temp around 80F-85F (27C-30C), the Ph was at 5.8, and nutes about 190-220.

I did some research and I concluded that a)my water temp was to hot, b) they had too much light (too hot and stressful) c)too much water

Now, I am switching them to an 18/6 light and raised the light to about 12 inches from the tops, stopped the drip of water from the top, but the roots are into the reservoir and the mist-er is still running (they still seem plenty moist), the air temp is around 72F-76F (22C-25C) and the water temp has stayed at 75F (24C), the Ph is 5.8 and the nutes are 220.

They seem to be doing fine, but it’s still too soon to tell if they are going to pull through. I really am hoping to get this to work this time, and keep a running journal here to keep you all posted if it works.

Any comments, questions, or ideas?

Thanks a ton in advance!

As of this morning my little girls (hopefully) are still alive. But my Ph went from 5.8 to 6.2 over night. Added a bit of Ph down. The water temp is still hovering around 73F (23C). Wait and see if they survive this ordeal I guess.

Any comments would be welcome. Thank! :joint:

There starting to pick up. I think they might survive. The leaves still have ugly brown spots, but the yellowing seems to be gone and they seem to be less droppy than last night.

You should invest in a water heater/cooler to keep your temperatures steady in the water. That will reduce a lot of problems with plants, including your pH. So far your plants are doing good, aside from a couple of spotting problems you have everything right.

Thanks toolage.

I've managed to keep the temps in control this time by cracking my window and raising the light a bit. But next grow I am definitly getting a temp control for the tank.

The plants are looking really good this morning, green and perky. I don't use the top water drip system in my hydro anymore, just let them draw water from the bottom. But last night, for some stupid reason, I felt the need to water them. Man did they droop after that... no more watering by hand.

I'll add some pics after work.

They are looking good. They are a little taller every time I look at them now. Up'd the nutes to 500ppm.

Also, starting to think about cloning and if I need to be trimming/topping these plants at all... have to do some research on that.

And here's some new pics.

Heya, Thought I would take a peak at your cool cab. They look great, very vibrant green. I would wait another week, then top them. You can clone those tops if you want in rock wool. Then a week or two later start to flower if you know they are all females. My last grow in my cool cab, I vegged too long and they ran out of room. So for my next time I will flower as soon as I can. It is all about the learning experiences. Good job, keep on growin.:peace:

Scary... I started flowering this morning. Got my bulb changed before it came on, changed to bloom nutes, and thinned a few plants.

I was down to 5 California Orange and 3 bagseed plants. They seemed way to crowded (see before and after photos) so I pulled out all the bagseed plants. Not sure if that was a good idea...

Here's the theory: They were so crowded that some of the COs were bending to grow around the BS plants. And none were getting enough air flow. I'd rather take my chances and keep 5 of the same genetic background then waiting to see gender with them all mixed/crowded together.

Hopefully I don't hate myself later for thinning... :?

(feel free to comment/question in my journal)

I had to do the same, actually one of mine got choked out. Tha is what would have happend to yours too. The strong ones choked out the wek ones, and overgrow them. They look great. Keep on growing.:peace:

So the flowering hasn't been going so good... My plants leaves are curling under and there are some patches that have died. Can't seem to figure out the problem. Ph is between 5.7 to 6, seem to like to get higher throughout the day, nutes are at about 1000ppm, water temp is 27C and air temp is 24C. They are getting a bit taller, but that's about it.

Ideas? Anyone?

I have not checked for bugs, and they are california orange. I'll bug check now and make an update.

Also, I had a problem with algae a while back and was using neem oil and I looked for signs of insects, don't seem to have any.

Lowered the Ph to 5.4-5.5, maybe that will help.

Anyone got any other ideas? Thanks!

it could be a nute defeciency. Maybe you could try and up your PPM by about 100 or so. It could also be MG defec, but this is all a guess.
