seeds haven't sprouted

I am starting to get a little worried. I have two pots with a seed in each. On wensday I recieved my seeds and put them directly in to the soil in the pots which I had dampened. Then on Thursday I decided to put cling film plastic over the top of the pot as I heard this is a more reliable way to get seeds to germinate. There are 35 watt daylight cfls over each pot. Shud i be worried that they haven't broke the surface of the soil yet? And how long shud it take to happen!? Thanks for your help

no, some seeds can take over a week to germinate. If you're new to growing you should check out the grow FAQ at the top of the page.

Its always better to germ outside of soil..... no light... pie plate.. p. towel..seeds..p. towel..plate..water.. and keep wet.. mine are up in 24-36 hr. usually..but I've had them take up to 10 days.. Luck.

what's the average it takes? If it takes 14 days I will be pulling my hair out. If it makes any difference the seeds are an autoflowering variety called snowryder.

soak the seeds in water for atleast 24hr. and when they crack open then plant the seed in soil and about 72hr you should have a plant if the seeds are any good.

NEVER germ seeds outside of a medium, that is stoner horticulture and goes against millions of years of evolution. It is a terrible practice that only slows down the process and creates room for human error.

24-48hrs (starter plug/heated propagator/light immediately) for me to get sprouts from quality seeds. No soaking, no paper towel(especially if your putting it in a paper towel for how long? a couple days?), no risk of damagin your plant at it's absolute most fragile state!

Heated propagator, root riot plugs, dome on, sprouts in less then 5-6days max or I know they aren't worth wasting my time.

Seeds can take a while to germinate. If your environment is dialed and they take longer then that they are a weak phenotype, I personally don't waste my time on anything that isn't working on it's first set of leaves by 7 days sticking into the cube. This is why I can't see wasting a day or two in a paper towel or shot glass of water. All you have to do is think about it for a second to realize that method doesn't make sense.

Germination has it's place in horticulture. If you have 10 seeds but you plan on growing your best 4, you'd plant the 6 that germinated in the towel and then eventually keep the best 4 plants down the road. If you need to know which ones are keepers before planting them, then ok, it's worth wasting a day or two.

If you plan on planting all your seeds it serves no purporse except wasting time : )

Havent tried anything else after trying the paper towel method. Seems the most reliable imo. The longest with this was about 5 days. In your case of soil , a week to 2 weeks should be the standard. Heat does help to speed things up.
