So what are the real differences between regular strains and autoflowers?

Difference is, you can keep normal plant in veg a lot longer which is great for beginners, also with auto flower there's no room for mistakes once the seed is germinated the clock is ticking which is best for experienced growers, less veg = smaller plant = less yield. I personally wouldn't go for auto as you can get a lot more yield with just waiting a little longer.
 
Imo you can definitely yield better with photo plants. Also you control when you flower so you can get your canopy to what ever size you desire and flip. Also the quality of photos blows auto out of the water. You can't get an auto in some of the great high thc strains that you can with photos.
 
imvho, when you cross ruderalis, which is basically ditch weed from russia, with any non auto flowering strain, it's only going to lower the potency of the strain you started out with.. idk why people would want watered down genetics so they can save a few weeks in a grow..
i know autos have come a long way from say the lowryders, which i think were some of the first autos sold, but they still all contain that ruderalis gene, unless we're talking about some of dr greenthumb"s autos, which aren't truly autos as they contain no ruderalis genetics, but rather a strain he says comes from iran, which one can keep in vegetative growth by giving the plant 24 full hours of light..
i've yet to grow an auto personally, and don't really see myself growing any, other than maybe for shits and giggles since i have a ton of auto seeds i got as freebies that i'd grow out while i was waiting for my photoperiod plants for finish..
another down side not including yield, is that say you get an auto that you really like, something special and fits your needs.. you can't really clone it.. ok, ok, technically, you could cut a part of the plant off, root it, and grow it out, technically making it a clone.. the problem lies in the fact that the clone from any plant is the same age as the mother plant which it came from.. being that autos flower from time, rather than by light, the auto clone would want to flower pretty much as soon as it started to root, meaning it'd yield poo poo since you couldn't veg it out longer and get it to be a decent size before flowering, pretty much making clones from autos useless, again, imvho..

I've tried many different autos. Low quality, small amounts. <----- The real difference. I've only found 1 auto flower i would grow again which is blue mammoth, higher yield and higher quality. The only reason I've grown autos is for journal purposes. I'll take a photo over auto any day.

Autos might be ok for beginners but if your serious about growing there is no real place for them imo. Even as a beginner I would recommend photos but people get drawn into the not having to mess with light schedule and having a fast harvest but they are sacrificing yield and quality at the same time. Its really not even that much quicker to finish an auto compared to a photo. I finish my photos in 91 days tops with 8oz a plant, 2-2.25# per 1000w

while i agree with what you're saying, no need to call people's names m8.. but i do hate when people tell member's to google something instead of starting a thread on it..

that's fairly hypocritical of you..If you practiced what you preach you would have ignored my response. Imo he should use Google. Is that not solid advice? Will Google not give him the answers he needs?

Using your logic, almost every question asked on here could be googled and we wouldn't have a forum. Not trying to offend you, just saying

That's my point....research is the key..If you don't understand something you are researching then by all means ask away and let's have an educated discussion about it...walking into a room blind is the reason people fail.. so I'd have to disagree with you..
 
I felt he did do some research and was looking for peoples opinions. He asked why don't people use them and stated a couple reasons why he didn't understand. Bottom line is people should be able to ask what ever questions they want with out getting told to go look it up on google. If you feel its a stupid question, don't respond imo

I felt like he did zero research..he asked what the diffrence between the two was if you look that up uou will seethat one is on a light schedule and the other is ona timeschedule. Doubt he looked anything up ..anyway he can ask whatever he wants and i can say whatever i want...i felt i ledhim in the right direction.its not a problem we all gotour own opinions.
 
Thank you for all replies, I did do my research on a lot of other things but since I joined the forum i felt like this would be the appropriate place to ask, and a particular strain I was looking at was the autoflowering Northern Lights. It says it has an average yield of 50-90g so what would be the average yield if say i were to just grow some bagseed photo, around what yield range would i be expecting?
