Soil

Sadly i have been known to use cheep not so good for the plants soil.. i want to do everything right this time around and have the best i can have, so what would you suggest for soil? do i use one soil for seedlings and another after i transplant? whats the best thing to do? thanks for your help.

There are some great things you can do to soil before planting to make it easier for you but I don't know any of that lol. I am a beginner like you and I suggest using 1 type of soil all the way through. Fox Farm Ocean Forest is a good beginners soil but gets a lot of flack for its over abundance of nutrients that most times will burn seedlings a little. I had that happen to mine and ended up transplanting to a bigger pot with the same soil. Everything above the burnt growth is green now. No matter what soil you use, if you can find dolomite lime then you should also look at mixing some of that into the soil. It will maintain a stable pH as well as providing magnesium and some other nutrient I can't think of at the moment. I wish I used dolomite lime in my grow but I jumped the gun and planted right away without thinking. There are a lot of things you can do before hand to make it easier on the maintenance of your babies.

Go to your local hydro store and get an all organic mix like fox farms ocean forest or roots organics soil. I would use some nutes with either mix because the soil wont supplement all the nutes you need for your plant to thrive. Although you can grow without extra nutes and pull some decent buds.

i was looking into the fox farm line for soil and nutes.. i might just go that road.. how much is a bag of the FF ocean forest ? i know price may be different here but just to give me an idea.. thanks for the replys.

I transplanted 3 big plants into new FF OF and 3 days later they showed nitrogen overdose with curled tips. They have healthy root systems and transplanting didn't phase them. Wish I had used nutrient free and will in the future.

Check their other soils. The OF has time release nutrients. Whatever brand use one that is nutrient free and add your own as needed. It ain't the easiest but it ain't rocket science.

thanks for the reply.. i guess the only other question i have is since im upgrading to a new 1000 watt light, what is the best hood? i have a 4x4 tent right now but i think im going to upgrade to a 6x6.

I've always been in the cheaper is better camp as far as ballasts and hoods go. As long as it's the right size, shape and air-cooled, go for it. I get a lot of stuff from htgsupply.com but they have a local store too.
