Some advice about growing tomatoes

Hi, I'm interested in building a simple drip/ebb&flow system to grow tomatoes, and I need some advice.

My plan is to build small system(2-3 5 gallon buckets) due to space limitations, and I'm not sure whether to use a drip or an ebb and flow system for this size.
Complexity of the build is not much an issue for me, I'm quite capable with improvising, the important thing is reliability, productivity of the plants and the size of the reservoir.

Also, I want the lighting to be as energy efficient as possible, meaning I wish to let the sunlight do most of the work, and use fluorescent lighting for a few more hours when its darker, to create a long "day". So I'd like to know how much lighting(wattage-wise) would you recommend, and which spectrum to use in each stage(same as cannabis?).

Oh, and would medium would you recommend?

Thanks.

Try a tomato forum. We grow weed here.
jesus man, hydro s hydro is hydro... Don't matter if its tomatoes, herbs, Mary j or strawberries.

As for reliability, I've heard of drip lines plugging over time. If your doing proper up keep then really it comes down to failure of the pump , power or the timer. With flood and drain/e&f you could use two pumps to flood with and two separate timers to prevent whats in your control. I like the idea of e&f, if you have the proper space, however it sounds like your dripping onto medium on a table... Likely space isn't an issue. I'd go e&f, IMO

What I would do for tomatos (and all hydro actually) is 5gallon DWC. Corey from BPN grows his veggies like that. Here's his garden:
