Someone Help!

okay so this is my first grow. i decided to use a cool tube with 1000w MH and 1000w HPS, using the MH for veg and HPS for flowering. i have six clones about 4 inches high with good roots and good nodes, the roots were poping out of the cube when transplanted. the clones have been in soil for a week. my friend said the MH will "burn them" and "stretch" them. so he gave me a riged up lighting set, the lights are those energy saving lights that you buy at walmart. when do i switch to the MH lights? and is switching to a HPS to flower good?

start the 1000 watter high and slowly work it down over a few days to a week
