Spectrums and triggering early flower in outdoor plants

I was pondering on autoflower plants early this morning and wondering if they had got any better over the years. They do look better then the ones I grew back in 2010, but the inconsistencies and overall lack of quality are still obviously there. I'm not trying to turn this into an autoflower debate, so don't respond, because I wont either. I then recalled reading years ago about different spectrums effecting short day and long day plants flowering. Back then the technology really wasn't there to produce specific spectrum's easily. Obviously LED technology has grown leaps and bounds and it may be possible now. Thoughts? Input?

Here's a write up that glosses over what I'm talking about: http://www.hammiverse.com/lectures/39/1.html
