Squirrel cage fan

I have a fan similar to the one at home depot. Instead of straight wiring it inside the wall I wanted to put it on an extension cord. I take it I could just find a decent gauge extension cord and cut it. Is this applicable?

I did just that with some internal ballast HID lights and it worked like a charm, just make sure you get high enough gauge.
