Until recently I'd only ever done cannabutter, which was nice but tricky dealing with the boiling water etc, and it can spoil quickly if you don't freeze it but then is hard to use when you do freeze it. Just recently I tried cannaoil and it worked out really well. I have read that the saturated fats in coconut oil, which is like the new healthy oil due to medium chain triglycerides, is one of the best things to use to bond the THC. I had a big bottle of MCT oil which is both coconut and palm medium chain triglyceride oils, bought it for my husband to try as it's supposed to be good for athletes & can actually help you lose weight as it is used more as energy instead of being sent to storage as most fats are. That makes me think it gets into your system faster. It has no real flavor, very bland. I lightly toasted a good quarter oz bud plus some sticky leaves at low temps (decarboxylate?) and put it in a crockput on low for about 4 hours with about 13 or 14 ounces of MCT oil. I wasn't aiming for super-strong, but what I got made a respectable batch of brownies with a half-cup of the oil and I have plenty left over. Waited until it was cool enough to handle and strained it into a dark bottle for the fridge, could squeeze out the cloth with my hands since it was cool. It doesn't taste bad taken by the spoonful either. I like that it's kind of multipurpose that way. There is a flavor but it would disappear in almost any baked good, like the cornbread I'm going to make to go with dinner.
I will try making the next batch stronger, and am also planning a batch of the coconut oil that hardens at cool temps so I can have something to use like a shortening.
Saw a glycerin recipe once that advised mixing in some alcohol partway through the crockpot simmering, something called Mars drops I think. I believe the lid was left off to allow the alcohol to evaporate out. The idea seemed to be that the alcohol helped pull out whatever the glycerin might not, and left it behind in the tincture. I will probably try that way if I can find the recipe again.
