To repot or not to repot????

Growing in soil or coco. What is everyone's take on their experience with starting photo plants in their final container vs starting in small containers and potting up to a bigger container. I have been starting in the final container but was interested in the potting up idea. Definitely thinking about it for my outdoor photos this summer. I successfull rooted my favorite plant in my indoor grow in a rapid rooter and put in a solo cup with coco so I will be potting that in a 3 gal bag with coco in a week or two. Although I have had great results starting seeds in the coco 3 gal.

my first plants i went up in pot sizes gradually. but my second plants were planted in their final pots. 2 things ive noticed. 1) i water a lot less now because the roots can go wherever they want in final pots rather than making a compacted root ball as you go up in sizes. 2) all my plants will be flowering next week and i havent had to use one drop of nutrients yet and i can already tell these are going to be 5x more yield than my first crop.

I've tried both methods with photo periods (I haven't grown autos yet). I use rapid rooters and found that going straight to a 5 gal pot gave me slow growth and had to be real careful about watering. Rapid rooter to solo cup, then 5 gal fabric pot is my favorite method. Easy to water and the plants got to full veg faster.

I love the lack of consensus!
I personally do one transplant from solo cup and add mycorrhizae.
My next grow will be auto though so I'll have to adjust to planting right into the final pot. The learning never ends!

I don't think it's so much a lack of consensus, but more that a lot of people just don't do it and haven't noticed any issues. I do look at the root structure when I harvest and it has usually filled in pretty nicely. But, after seeing the graphic I posted a few posts above, it did 'click' in my head that the roots did fill out more at the bottom of the pot like they show in the bottom right image.

I find square works much better than round, hence I place my grow bags inside milk crates. Works great for me, no root circling.

I started this with the plants I started a few weeks ago and I agree. I'm seeing major differences in the growth rate and especially with the appearance of the roots. The roots are much thicker and fuzzier than the plants I've grown in the past.
