Topping - what did I do wrong?

This was my first time topping plants which I did above the 3rd node. I started with 3 plants of each strain, so tried both single topping and topping twice.

With some of the plants the topped nodes were “outgrown” by the nodes below the top.

For example:

above - blue is first top, purple is second top. However the nodes BELOW the 4 tops (green arrows) have more dominant growth with larger buds.

also

above - again the nodes below the blue top grew more dominant.

In some of my plants the topped nodes maintained their dominance but I can’t tel what differentiates them?

I can speculate how it happened... when I cut the tops, the new growth remaining at the top nodes were very small compared the the big fan leaves/growth on the node below the top. Therefore the growth on the tops is behind from the get go.

Did I do something wrong? How can I endure that the top node tops remain dominant?

Sounds like you didn't do any LST.
When you start topping, you wanna expose the new growth sites as much as possible and pull the undergrowth down and to the sides.
Looks like you just let it grow and the main nodes got blocked out.
