Using kief to make oil, a few questions

Thanks for any advice. I’ve greatly enjoyed making butter and oil in recent months and appreciate the expertise here.

The last time I decarbed kief (@240f for around 35 minutes) it turned into a carmel-like substance, and some stuck permanently to the foil that I had placed it in (which I placed onto a cookie tray in the oven). It worked out fine, and the kief separated into the coconut oil effectively, but there was some wasted material and perhaps I over-cooked stuff a bit(?). I thought I had spread it out pretty well, but that wasn’t necessarily the best thing anyway, as the heated kief stuck to the foil. Any recommendations for a better surface on which to heat the kief? Or better ways to decarb?

I infused the oil in a mason jar, which I placed in a sauce pan with simmering water for around four hours, mixing it around occasionally. Didn’t bother to strain it, as I’m not bothered by the kief, though much did sink the bottom before it solidified. I wondered if that stuff might be more potent, or if a four hour simmer removed the thc from the solid material and I should just strain it next time.

I used three grams of kief (all I had accumulated) and one cup of oil, finding a teaspoon to be a pleasant dose, though I continue to experiment. I would likely have used more kief if I had it, though I can also use less oil. I would welcome recommendations.

Preferred use so far has been to add it to my coffee or tea, which I find pleasant, though some oil invariably sticks to the sides of the cup. Any way to prevent this or to help the oil emulsify (?) into the liquid more effectively? This is not my biggest concern, but also seems a little wasteful. I would welcome any other suggestions for quick application of the oil.

Much appreciated! I’m getting ready to make my next batch!

Wow, four hours over a simmering heat? You wouldn't want excess heat and time to over-decarb that,
if I'm guessing right. Over heat and you convert the THC to CBN/D as it continues to decarb. What temp exactly was "simmering"?

Not to sure of the exact temperature. The water was not boiling (the oil and decarbed kief were in a mason jar in the water). I worried it might not be hot enough. My internet research (I know….) suggested times between 2-6 hours in the double boiler, so I went for four. Just experimenting. Thanks for the help!

I'm probably way off here and don't know what I'm talking about at all.
You did say you decarbed.
I decarbed kief (@240f for around 35 minutes)
So I'm not sure what
any further heating would do to the THCa to THC conversion through decarbing.
Fadedawg most assuredly could give you the definitive answer, of that I'm sure.
As to your problem with stickage I would have no idea. Maybe try using parchment?
Better solution might be what I'm pretty fadedawg would say which is to decarb your
kief in situ, rather than as kief first. Or maybe heat the kief on teflon? Sorry I'm just
confusing your situation rather than offering help based on my own experience. :(

I use a small beaker or a shot glass to decarb in. Depending on what I'm making I might use the same vessel for infusing with oil.

Also adding lecithin will help in a couple ways. Potentuating the effects and as a emulsifier, as in mixing oil/water better.

Along those lines I like mct oil. It doesn't have much taste and mixes well in coffee or tea.

And you can use it in something thick like a smoothie or add a thickening agent like 210s

My 160-220 micron Dry Ice Kief is the same after decarb just darkened from blond to brown
Z Oil, dishes and caps.jpg

I'd decarb in your working dish if your Kief keeps doing the full melt number and turning to a puddle.
The matched pair of stainless steel cat food dishes are among my most prized possessions. They fit nicely on the mug heater to keep the goo hot for filling capsules with.
15 grams of Decarbed Kief
3 tablespoons Coconut Oil (LouAna)
2 teaspoons Lecithin (Fearn Liquid)
Heat 220 F for 20 minutes.
Done.

Z caps and dish.jpg

You don't need or want to cook the hell out of it. The less you cook the more speedy it stays. Wired is another good word "On".
----------------------------
The Coconut oil I use has zero taste or smell. The Lecithin is neutral as well. Organic / Cold pressed Coconut Oil will both smell and taste of it.
Both are solid below 76 F and liquid above that. This can be both advantage and dis. It sets hard in capsule and is better for long storage life of the Oil. Liquid Coconut oil is a common choice for eyedropper users.
MCT is usually a blend of Coconut and palm oils and fractionated with the Lauric acid removed. Some claim the Lauric acid has it own useful properties and should be left in. Ehhhh I don't see much difference at all and save coin and use the regular Coconut oil.

Decarb, Make paste, Heat paste. Done.
With Hash and Kief it really is that easy and fast. 1 hour start to finish.
Decarb 240 for 40
Process 220 for 20
At this strength 1 drop = 3mg

Lecithin is both a smoothing Homogenizer and a bioavailability improver. You get more from less and it lasts longer as well. It will also help keep your particles suspended in the oil better. Not perfect but a substantial improvement.

Thanks, this is great information. I have tried now with butter, liquid coconut oil and solid coconut oil. I actually prefer the taste of the solid, as I like coconut. My three grams to a cup of oil is super light weight compared to your mix, lol. It’s really a question of opportunity for me. I’m ready to make some today and have another three grams or so of kief ready to go. I will cook it for a much shorter time.

I have a couple questions if you don’t mind. If my final vessel is a mason jar, how should I decarb? Can I simply put the jar in the oven at 240? Super noob questions, I’m sure. Do you recommend something else? Looks like you simply spread it out on a cooking tray and then scrape it together?

it also looks like you process directly on a hot plate? That seems a great idea, though I don’t have one currently. I don’t think a mason jar in boiling water is going to get that hot. Am I better off simply simmering in a pan on low for 20 minutes?

Thanks so much. My last go was really sleepy, which was actually fine, but I’d enjoy something more up.

This should help. About midway through he goes over doing on a stovetop.

You can decarb in a jar or oven roasting bag to limit the smell if needed. I'm in California and fill the entire neighborhood with the scent of roasting Kief all day long when I'm making capsules. The little toaster oven I use is either decarbing or processing one load after the other.
The Coffee Mug warmer is actually hot enough I could work on it but mostly it is to keep the Coconut oil Liquid and hot to flow well in the eyedropper.

I won't use glass or ceramic any longer. I had a ceramic oven rated dish explode and I lost 15 grams of Hash and oil into the depths of the Oven. Metal cookware from that day on.

Take a silicone baking sheet and use 4 small binder clips and pinch each corner and clip it making a "boat". You can use this in the oven and do quite large batches with no fear of spill over. No scraping it all together either. Simply take it out of the oven and throw it in the freezer for a minute for super easy collection.
