Want to never see a gnat in your room?

I have recently learned that something I do has prevented me from ever seeing a fungus gnat.
We all visit our lovelies at least a couple of times a day, and part of my regimen is to use my fingers to break up the soil to a few inches on the surface. I originally did this as a means of helping me judge when to water, but over the 4th I had a friend over, who owns a nursery, showed him my crop, and did the soil tumbling thing while we were in room. That's when he told me what I was doing helped prevent gnats. If the fungus is disturbed regularly, the matrix that gnat larvae require is prevented from growing. Hope this is helpful.

Here is another little trick you may try if you already have a Gnat problem.

Make a paper cone and insert the small end of the cone inside a mason jar and tape around the lid of the jar to the cone then drop a few chunks of banana or fruit into the jar. The Gnats will fly into the jar through the cone and not be able to find the way out. Then just put jar in freezer for a bit the poor out the dead gnats. Be Easy

Yup. gently raking the topmost inch of my soil keeps these critters away. I have a bunch of earthworms in my pots too. They help loads when it comes to aerating the soil, even though generally, Fungus gnat larvae are only found in the first couple of inches into your dirt.
