Water Cloning Question

I'm trying out a new method of cloning, and my first attempt didn't go so well. I have a six site bucket with an airstone in the bottom that I tossed my clones into. Is it necessary to put a dome over the plants if their bottoms are constantly in the water? Also, as I've been trying to keep these plants in the same room as my mothers, I put a laundry basket over the top to keep them shaded and only allow indirect light onto them through the sides of the basket. I could really use some feed back and advice. the first six didn't take (which pisses me off!) but I didn't have the basket over the top, so I'm assuming it was too much light.

Why didn't they take? Where they drying up? Or did it just take too long? I used to swear by the dome now I use anti wilting spray and it has helped me tons......I also clone in water and do pretty well with it so maybe some pics of the system would help too....

They didn't get dried out, but after 11 days the leaves were yellowing pretty bad and the tops with new growth tips were turning brown. All the while no bumps on the stems that would indicate it was trying to grow roots. I'll try to take some pics tonight with my phone and get them up.

Does anyone know what the signs of an over-lit clone looks like?

Cool I'll check it out tonight, what are you using for cloning gel/powder? And do you put anything in the water?

I wanted to do a little experiment so I put rootech on half of them and left the other half plain as a control group. I didn't put anything in the water as I figured the nutes would probably either burn them or delay root growth since they don't have to grow roots to search for nourishment, but I could be wrong on that one. I was wondering if a little SuperThrive might be a good idea though. I should be leaving work here in an hour or so. Will have pics up after that.

try to add more air stones and have the stems just above the water level.

the air bubbles bursting will mist the clones enough to keep the stem wet. this allows for the stems to get the right amount of oxygen and water.

when taking your cuttings,,,,,,i like to let mine soak in the water for 30 minutes before going into the cloner. this helps to not let the cutting dry out.

let the air pumps run 24/7 and check to make sure the stems are staying wet. also keep your water temp above 70*f.

here is a link..............$$ my WM aero bubbler cloning machine $$

i now have 6 air stones in the cloner........

I do something similar, nice set up bigmike

I had to move some things around so it looks a little out of whack but it's hard to take pics when it's shooting water. I took some flexible PVC and made a halo with some holes in it and a nice pump and that's all. I also add Power Clone to the mix and some hydroguard...works well. The halo usually sits about half way up and it sits level, like I said I had to push it out of whack for the pic....then rooted clones go into my rail system..I have a bunch of rails so I can do the perpetual thing, one or two rails in one or two rails go out etc....

Here's pics as promised. The tub holds two gallons, airstone is on 24/7 as are lights.

thanks Gygax, have you cut the holes for the neoprene to set in or just a little smaller to set on the lid. also nice set up....:joint:

2 inch net pots with neoprene put right in them...no medium at all. I know 2 inches isn't stable but with wire ties it works great....ghetto but it works nicely.

thats not ghetto, this is..........my clear tubing kept growing algae inside. so i cut my holes bigger and thought (quick fix), coolie cup ? and started cutting the (coolie) neoprene just like the inserts you buy...... , mine just sit on top of the lid...:joint:

thats a lot of clone there, might take longer too root, they look really good though. What part of the mom are they cut from?
I've been taking them off the lowest branches possible, leaving at least a node so I'll have more babies from that branch later on. They came from the bigger plant that's on the right in one of those pics. Their stems are basically soaking in the water below, and I scarified on edge of each of them like normal. I was hoping that since these were constantly in water I could get away with some larger than average clones, but I didn't realize it was going to delay rooting. Any idea on how long those should take?

no hole saw?

grizz, i have done both ways and found that the ones left standing in the water (most) have wound up with rotting stems.
