I am old school organic and soil guy and have recently experimented with 2- 5 gal DWC air stone fish pump hummer styles = these had great results as to why = now I want to do a run of more buckets this time -but multi pumps is not practical - also good stones ? how often to clean change out air stones ?

I got a generic koi pond pump from an online aquarium store. It runs almost silent and enough air for 12 sites easy.
For air stones, go big. I like the 4 or 5" discs or the 'bubble' curtains. These look like soaker hose but they make nice small bubbles.
You will have to clean them, whatever type you get, ever run. The fine secondary roots will cling to them.

i use the big active aqua pumps. i think they can push 12 stones a piece. i just shop vac the shit off of the stones after each run, but you can throw them in some water+peroxide to clean them too. i only change them out when they break or stop pushing air
something else to consider- a friend of mine uses a 6" inline fan with a speed controller directed into a diy pvc manifold to aerate his entire grow (multiple rdwc systems, holding reservoirs, etc. not a small op). ive heard aquarium keepers/fish breeders do this too. might be worth looking into. i would do this if i were starting a new build, but its not really practical in my current space

i'm experimenting with some stainless diffusers that i got at a brewing supply house. they make fine bubbles and should be easy to clean and re-use

Thanks all of you for the help and suggestions it sent me in the right direction

Now to decide drain / dump - options 1612739574859.png

Search Alita or Hailea linear air pumps. Theses are expensive but the knock offs are fine. My knock off is silent compared to the Alitas' that came with my undercurrent.
hailea is way more silent then the usual compressors.
its also quite cheap in europe, strangley not in the usa.

I agree about the 4" diffuser disks, they aren't like regular airstones...bit more expensive but they produce copious bubbles

I use some pumps I found on eBay - Resun Air 4000 - 2 air outlets, $30 and they also have one with 4 outlets - Resun Air 8000. I have two of these pumps, one as a backup. Had them for a couple years now and they still work good. Fairly quiet as well.

I tried one of the more industrial-looking ones thinking why not, it'd be nice to run six hoses off one pump. The damn thing is so loud it can be heard on the other side of my house. I need something quiet because my tent is in my office. So instead of one jumbo I bought two of these. https://amzn.to/3jSmHEM Super quiet and I'm running two of the big flat air stones off one at about 50% power and you can't hear a thing over my ventilation fan AC infinity 6inch on 3.
