What are wood ashes (npk?)

i think they act as a ph up also... dont quote me on that, but i worked for a xmass tree farmer last year and he said that the lumber mills would drop off tons of ashes on a piece of land to raise the ph of the soil for free. they do this because they run out of room for the ashes the guy was telling me...

I remember I had a bonfire randomley drunk in the middle of my moms yard one time then the grass grew there like 5x greener and faster for like 2yrs(she was pisstt lol) so I was like free organic ftw does it matter what type of wood I use (treated or not)?
