hey guys, first hps grow and i can say i did a pretty nice job, i cut the fanleafs/sugar leafs all of and hung the plants to try 3 1/2 days ago however i stil dont rly know when to start curing. the outside was crispier yesterday than it was today and now im just confused. but it feels nice tbh :P hands get all stickky! so if somebody ccould tell me how im supposed to feel the bud to cure it, the stem sorta crackles but yet bends when i try snapping.

i let it dry until it is starting to get nice and crispy, but just before the point that the stem will easily snap. then the nuggies go into mason jars and into a dark cool place. i leave the jars open for 12-16 hours every other day until they are perfect, and then seal for good to cure until being smoked/vaped

drying doesn't have a time period. It depends on your RH air circulation and temps. A lot of people say wait until the stem breaks but for me thats a little long. Plus my area makes my buds dry way too fast. I like to try and jar the buds asap and just keep a very close eye on them. First check in a bout an hour and keep doubling the check time if they don't feel wet. If they still feel wet ill leave the jar open or take them about for a bit. Then close em up and check in another hour until they aren't wet to the touch in that time. Then I check two hours late and repeat. THC only degrades slightly slower than chlorophyll. So the more air its subjected to the more degraded the thc will be in theory. So I jar my stuff early to slow the drying down and control it better. A slow even dry and a long cure is the key to good tasting herb.

Dude whatever you do dont be overly eager to start curing. you want to let them dry for ATLEAST 5 days man it just depends on the area you have them hanging in but you want to wait until the buds are atleast crispy on the outside or dry enough to smoke,...the stems should still bend though. Just dont put them in jars while they are still soft to touch because they are way to wet and will mold if you try and cure too early....letting them dry for too long is always better than not letting them dry long enough

The slower you can dry them the better. When you dry really fast you get a harsher smoke and the smell is kind of like hay. if you can jar and un jar regularly to let them dry slower and more evenly it will give you the best potency, greatest smell and smoothest smoke. just have to be careful about mold of course. mold will also smell when it is starting to grow so you can keep a loot out for that

Learning when your weed, let alone each different strain, is very much a learning curve based on trial and error, and is pretty dependant on the drying environment in question. There is no specific guide. It took me a good number of grows to dial it in myself.

i agree. usually my drying environment for my 1st harvest is warm and they dry pretty quick. the 2nd harvest is cooler and can hang longer.

i never let the stem snap before putting in jars. its too late imo. i always put in the jar early, but it only stays in for a couple of hours to even out the moisture. then it goes into paper bags with the bags open. let it dry some more and stir it gently after a couple hours. once it gets a bit dryer, it goes back into jars until the moisture evens out a bit. after a few times of this, the paper bags can be closed up at the top. each time you will be able to keep it in the jar longer and less time in the bags.

it may not be so much as curing going into the jars early but rather trying to lengthen the dry time before the cure. you just cant leave them in the jar for a long period when they still have too much moisture or you will get mold.

Definately, if in doubt, always better to jar up earlier than later. Do it later and the curing process is pretty much just a waste of time, do it too early and it's not really any hassle to empty the jar and leave it on some mesh etc for a day or so longer.
