both your images are jpeg the website converts them
im only mention this because your raw file was downgraded to a jpeg file once you uploaded it

Just a nikon D40 I picked up yesterday.
Actually, I dont think you can upload RAW pictures to the site. I have to save them as JPEG in order to show them here.

that was my point you wanted to show whitch one was better but there both the same format
for us to compare them you need to post 1 raw and 1 jpeg
i cant compare oranges to oranges
you can change the colour with any image editing program (i dont mean crap like the default stuff you get with windows)

I would be impressed if you could get those same results editing a JPEG. But I am still a noob photographer so I also wouldnt be surprised. There is almost no perceptible difference in visual quality between a RAW and a fine JPEG. It is a lot easier to manipulate RAW format pics in post.
But if you used the camera correctly you wouldn't need to correct in post production....

I prefer to shoot with neutral white balance because I shoot in many different light situations so it is easier for me to correct the white balance in Photoshop....

but yea, it can be taken properly .
try a fully manual camera and adjusting with only dodging and burning

I was assuming you would say after my post... 
BTW it was a nice image after the change in white balance and your correct, with any very important works, it's best to shoot in raw & jpeg for the very reason you addressed.
