Will Jan 5 be too late to plant outdoors?

Got seeds and was all excited. Got them to my friend who will be doing the growing. Unfortunately he tells me he will be gone 10 days from Dec 25 til jan 5.
I am down in Rio so we flip to 12 hrs at mid-March. Coming into lots of hot hot weather right now but was thinking of keeping them shaded but where they can get rain. Afraid if I start Jan 5th the veg stage will be too short.

Please any advice!!!

I figure might as well give it a shot with all the rain. Should be small enough that they won't be heavy drinkers anyway. Place somewhere out of direct sun but where there is plenty of light. Leave the Autos til my buddy gets back to have something just in case.
