The tip of one of the first 3-leaf leafs has yellowed. Is this just standard over-watering? For a seedling? I thought seedlings liked water, moisture and humidity. I don't water it all the time. Initially, I just watered with a cap-full or two from the gallon of distilled water which I had in a closet from a year ago. The plant is about 16 days old from planting the popped germinate seed into some organic potting mix and turning on 2 CFLs (32W) and one tube plant/aquarium 20W light positioned 1-4 inches from the plants top leaves.
This is a bagseed I luckily came across. It's the only seed I've seen in a couple of years, so I germed and planted it, and beat a path back to this green and smoky site, which I stumbled upon last year and drooled over ever since.
Full details:
(not my actual bag of weed nor my actual dog)
- Random bagseed (but the joint I shared seemed decent enough; weed was dry and brittle when I rolled it though. I snatched the seed after rolling for a new female acquaintance . I figured she wouldn't notice or miss it. I doubt she cared and I'm sure she has plenty more seeds, b/c she smokes all the time. I explain this in excessive detail because I don't want anyone accusing me of being a "seed ripper" or worse. My short newbie time here has made clear that "rippers" are among the worst scum to walk the planet, and rightfully so. I'll be sure to share a smoke or 2 with this girl when I get this seed harvested. I promise.

- Germed in wet paper towel in a ceramic small coffee cup, uncovered with distilled water. Took longer than expected to pop, but it did pop after I put the cup. All in all in all it only took about 2 or 3 days to germ. Seems I've germed others before overnight, but I guess I was just anxious and not patient enough. I need to get this seed harvested, cured, and smoked ASAP.
- Planted in Fafard's Organic Potting Mix in a 16oz plastic party cup with a few holes punched in bottom. I planted when it was a little less popped than the germed seed in above pic.
View attachment 2234962 (I did use CVS Distilled H2O2 but again this is not an actual pic. In fact, none of these pics will be my actual stuff b/c I hate all the pic taking and uploading. I lived in Amsterdam for about 6 months before I ever bought a camera or took a picture, and I only finally bought one when I got to Spain b/c that place is unbelievably naturally beautiful. Holland is flat, though the architecture, people, freedom and weed are beautiful. Maybe by the time I finish this grow I'll become an expert at pic taking, but I doubt it, and until and unless they pass the Medical MJ law here in my state making home growth, for personal medical usage, legal, then I probably won't be posting evidence of my experimentation, etc. This Med MJ law is on the ballot for this November. YAY! About time though. I left California about the same year they passed it, 2003 or 2004. I actually left in 2005. Sometime around then. I live in a liberal state which was the first to legalize gay marriage in the US, which I am cool with, but it'd sure be nice to legally smoke a joint at wedding, gay or straight. And Freedom should be Free, imo)
- Initial Lighting. It's what I had available at home.

- Initially, I placed the planted seed and cup on my stove under 2 32W Soft White (2700K) CFLs in some clip-on desk study-lamps and also one 14W Soft White I stuck in my stove's exhaust hood light. I placed the lights about 2-4 inches from the soil, except for the stove's light. And then I waited, and waited. Once a day I would throw a capfull or 2 of distilled water on the soil right above the germinated seed. Finally, within about 7 days I had the first cotyledons poking their green little heads above the soil. Game on.

- Then I got the idea to use this unused shelf I had in my closet (wire wrapped in white plastic, you know the kind, 4 shelves, shelves could be used for scrogging too) and place it over my kitchen sink so that I could place and elevate the plant very close to a GE 0W Plant and Aquarium 24" Wide Spectrum fluorescent I have over my kitchen sink. The shelf actually fit perfectly when I removed the bottom shelf, which was in the way of the faucet. I also removed the top shelf b/c it was too close to the light bulb. I used some books, small boxes and a couple of decks of cards to adjust height so that the plant was with an inch or 2 of the fluorescent tube.
Then I clipped the other to 32W CFLs to the shelf and attempted to get them close but the best I could do was about 5 inches and angled in a less than optimal position.
So this is my lighting now and since the it first sprouted cotyledons:

I also have a cup of some basil from my outdoor garden that I am experimenting with for indoor growing that required different elevation for light proximity than the bagseedling. The Basil plant is doing well, taller than the ones in my garden, but there are holes in 2 or 3 leaves. Not sure what that's from. I don't think it's from insects. Could be though b/c I do stick them outside, but the ones in my garden don't have the same holes. Googled, but still stumped. I'm thinking to start growing veggies indoors and year-round with hydroponics and good lights, but that's another story.
- I leave the lights on 24 hours per day. I remove the Basil plant at about 11pm and stick it outside so that it gets morning light. I also turn the 2 32W CFLs off at night, at about midnight, but that varies. Should I leave these on 4/7 as well?
The Mary Jane plant had cotyledons and the first 2 large single leaves within 7 days. I had the 2nd set of true iconic 3-leaf pot leafs on the 11th day and the 3rd set on the 12th day from planting. Growth rate is clearly increasing, as it sprouts 1 or 2 new leaf clusters every day it seems.
But this yellow-tipped leaf annoys me. Is it just from over-watering? I didn't totally water the cup so that water drained out until the first leaf set after the cotyledons appeared and matured, and I only completely watered it with distilled water maybe every other day, or every 3rd day. I can see now that keeping exact records of watering, fertilizing, etc can be helpful in diagnosing problems. Exact amounts, day, time, temp, etc, would be easy to write down and make figuring out what went wrong much easier. I will do this going forward.
Other than this one yellow-tipped leaf, the plant seems healthy and growing rapidly.
It's possible that the leaf was touching one of the lights for a few hours. It was def touching it, but I'm not sure for how long.
Maybe I will take a pic, cuz that would make diagnosis a lot easier, huh?
I have so many questions.
Does anyone distill their own water? I was looking these up on the net the other day. Seems like they should be cheaper, b/c it's basically a coffee-maker, with a steam/vapor condenser. They run about $120 and up from what I saw. There are tons of plans/vids to make your own.
Lastly, do I need to be using the other two 32W 2700K CFLs at all during this stage, or is the 20W Wide Spectrum Plant and Aquarium enough for the initial vegetative stage? I figured the increased lumens would improve growth. And should I mix 2700K 5400K when I put this all in the PC stealth box I'm making right now? I have 4 2700K lights I was going to use, but I saw one Cool Light CFL yesterday that I almost bought, but the packaging was damaged, and it was the only one in the store, and it seemed overpriced at $15. I was going to ask the courtesy desk to mark it down, but the line was too long, so I passed.
How important will that 5400K lighting be in the veg stage. Can I grow to maturity, veg and growth, with just 2700K lights?
Sorry so long and a bunch of different topics. So much fun to think about and do this stuff though. I'm gonna go attack the PC stealth case. I just drilled a few rivets out before writing this. Easy so far.
Thanks for any help, suggestions. or constructive criticisms, and Happy 4th of July.
