Technology and Materialist's

your life is yours to create. don't medicate your body without medicating the mind, life is about balance... once you tip the scales its harder to stabilize the swing of things.
so many people were raised with technology, not having force fed to them.. but given to them so easily and without effort. so many of us (including me) stop appreciating technology, instead we are slaves to it. everything we do is for another piece of material, another shirt, another game, another fuck, another cheeseburger. i understand why this happens. people have been brought up in a type of society where they are not given an opportunity to live life without the comforts of technology.
this goes hand in hand with "how can you experience good, without the bad... how can you appreciate the good, without ever knowing the bad. it doesn't cease to be appreciated..to us it just IS."
since we have not been forced to live (and yes, most of us would actually have to be FORCED to live without the comforts of technology) then how can we appreciate running water, refrigerators, microwaves, tv's, internet, cell-phones.
technology is making humans less human, we are becoming slaves to it. everything we do revolves around it. can you accept that you do this? can you accept that you choose to live this way.
can you accept that the reason you do the things that you do is because you choose to conform. you choose to conform to society in order to get what society offers...materialistic items.
yes i conform too, i like my tv, my video games and electricity. but if all of that were to disappear could you still be happy? can humans still be happy without technology? should humans be subject to life without the comforts of technology before they are given the gift of it? because technology is a gift, it is a precious gift that we have long forgotten to appreciate.
lets get some comments going, what do you all have to say about this?

I ‘m afraid we’re losing the real virtues of living life passionately, the sense of taking responsibility for who you are, the ability to make something of yourself and feeling good about life.

It’s like your life is yours to create. The more that you talk about a person as a social construction…or as a confluence of forces…or as fragmented or marginalized, what you do is you open up a whole new world of excuses. And when i talk about responsibility, i'm not talking about something abstract. i'm not talking about the kind of self or soul that theologians would argue about. It’s something very concrete. It’s you and me talking. Making decisions. Doing things and taking the consequences. It might be true that there are six billion people in the world and counting. Nevertheless, what you do makes a difference.
It makes a difference, first of all, in material terms. Makes a difference to other people and it sets an example. In short, I think the message here is… that we should never simply write ourselves off… and see ourselves as the victim of various forces.
It’s always our decision who we are.

Speak for yourself but i don't "do things" for "that next shirt", i earn oney for food and things i need. If my trousers do their job why would i buy another pair?

I have to say though, right thread for this forum, seem to be WAYYY too many greedy arseholes on this site interested in nothing but profit for toys. I find it depressing, The worlds fucked.

running water - don't need unless you are lumping moving bodies of water in with that one ;)
refrigerators - dont need
microwaves - don't need
tv's - refuse to have
internet - don't need
cell-phones - refuse to use

yes through my own experience in my opinion 95% of the population in the US are materialistic people.

lol if you get offended by this then you might be one of them, im just trying to bring up a discussion for debate.

what does everyone think? should humans be subject to life without the comforts of technology before they are given the gift of it?

You're against technological advancements? In all honesty your posts on page 1 were pretty incoherent and I couldn't make heads or tails of whether or not you had a point.

i'm not "against technology" but I do acknowledge that it is a double edge sword- whether because you're either saving/spending money, consuming resources/leaving industrial pollution, etc...

that said, appreciation of the technological luxuries that our culture has embraced can be as simple as conscious thoughts of gratitude, which I always do, especially when I take a relaxing bath or drink a cold glass of fresh well water, etc.

on the other hand- i realize there are certain technologies that i can do without, and it saves me time & money- like a cell phone. haven't had one in years and don't feel left out at all. the internet is much more convenient for me because although my laptop is somewhat old (again, don't need a new one so i refuse a new one) so many places have wifi now....and a computer allows me to access everything from news, personal documents, photos, networking for various reasons, etc. etc.

i think one must also examine social factors- what drives people to think they need new techological/material things? (phones, ipads, clothing accessories, etc...)

well, probably our natural human desire to compete...simple as that.

im not against technology, im against materialism and self willed ignorance. this isn't supposed to be about me i just want to know what everyone else has to say, you've said your piece man chill. if money is what makes you happy, then you have never felt true happiness before... from my own experience that is usually the case. people lose themselves in their greed for material things. like i said in the original post i too love my "things" my tv and computer and things of that sort. this is to make you think, this is to open your mind to different possibilities in life. you need to ask yourself what really makes you happy, are you who you really want to be and are there things about me that i need to change. i am constantly changing and trying to make myself a better person through the decisions that i make in life, making mistakes and learning from them is one thing... taking action and trying to change an aspect about yourself that you dont agree with is another. i believe life is all about balance in yourself, moderation is key. and i say again that all of this is only my opinion, and that im only trying to make everyone think... and that i love to hear good ideas that make me think in turn.
