so if you make S1 seeds grow out two and turn one male and pollinate again - you have s2 seeds? to stabilize the strain you need a NEW plant introduced - hopefully the best same strain and cross with the s2 to get you a F1 batch of seeds?

S1 and self a plant from those beans again is an S2.

S1 x S1 reversed > S1.5 IBL :P

Question from something said somewhere deep in this thread: Is it really illegal to sell seeds in CA? There a _lot_ of breeders in CA, and there are a lot of seeds sold. Are they all grey market?

I'm from the other coast, and don't sell anything, just wonderin...... Here in sunny MA, you can't legally sell seeds to rec growers, or clones for that matter, but it is legal to grow recreationally. The only "legal" way to get genetics is to be gifted them by a med grower or user.

Weird world we have built.

S1 is a self pollinated female. The offspring will be female and a good representation of the mother though not an exact copy.
If you took S1s, and made more generations of S1s, selecting for smaller size on the ones you self-pollinated, would you eventually breed out most of the potential S1 variation in size?

This whole genetic variation thing is confusing to me. You start out with 2 DNA strands, both provided by the same plant. That grows to make seeds.

Where on does the genetic variation come from?

There are passive and dominant genes. You can still have phenotype expression even when starting from the same pool. It's why even in identical twins, they can have different eye or hair color.

You would have some variation. The more you work it the less variation. Generally that's how a line is stabilized. Ibl. Inbred lines.

Thanks to both of you. Guess I'll have to read up on genetics.

Anyone know why "Betty Boo" fell out of favor with seed makers? I haven't tried recently, but a few months back you couldn't buy those anywhere.

I was interesting in getting some of doc danks gg#4 s1 seeds. I want to pose a question no one here has so... Are s1 seeds as vigorous (healthy growing) as f1, f2, bx1, etc. What I mean is is there any CATCH to these types of seeds because the seeds I want to purchase are $75 for 6 feminized s1 seeds. Why are these seeds cheaper than f1 gg#4 ? I'm guessing they arent as potent, vigorous (healthy and fast growing) as their counterparts? Anyone care to chime in?

Well firstly, gg4 is a pheno of gg. So unless someone is a wizard, theres no such thing as gg4 f1s.

S1 is a female plant which is stressed into producing male parts as well. (Stressed by enviro or chems) Therefore it self pollinates.

The resulting seeds can be hermie prone and will NOT grow you the exact same pheno.(gg4 is already hermie prone anyway)

Lol sorry this will probably confuse you even more.

I buy autoflower seeds from the i luv guy. Excellent seeds, and presumably F1.

I've cloned them by turning part of the plant (S1), I've crossed them with another of themselves (F2), and I've crossbred them (F?). 7 autoflower varieties they sell.

Only the cross bred ones have significant variation in genetics (never cross with blueberry if you expect autoflower).

The S1 and F2 seeds I've made are every bit as strong and potent as the parents. And if there's genetic variation, it's not significant compared to the growing conditions.

The seeds from i luv tend to sprout much faster. 1.5 to 3 days. But perhaps they know a trick, like microscoring the outside to speed up hydration.

Their seeds have a 100% germination rate in my experience. But this could be because they examine them with special tools to look inside. I usually pick the poorest looking seeds from my batch, so as to use those up first.

So mine have a 60% average germination rate, sometimes as low as 20%. On the other hand, I can make 1000 seeds on a single plant, so the germination rate loss isn't even significant. It's more of a problem that California state limits us to 6 at a time.

The MAIN difference I've found is the THC content percent rating. If it's 18% or more, you get nice dense buds covered in sugar. People who use medical marijuana always say it's good.

If the percent is 14% (like low ryder), people complain about the buds and they don't look dense even with the best possible trimming.

Amnesia Haze is my current favorite. Very dense with trichomes, nice smell. Poor yield but it matures fast.

It gives you a good chance of getting a similar mother to the pheno. Theyre just not guaranteed stable.

You should search this forum and google for the breeder and strain. Someone out there should have experience with it.

Or hopefully more ppl will chime in here cuz Im def no expert.

All Feminized seeds are hermie prone.

Now from what I have researched - it is not the genetics that make them go Herm it is the environment. It is just that they can be triggered a bit more easily from the environment than a regular seed.

I'm pretty sure Doc uses the silver to self his stuff. That is not the stress method. The silver binds with something to keep it from sending out the female signal. Without the signal, the plant reverts back to male. This is not stressing the plant.

The stress method is to let the plant flower well past it's normal ripeness. If it goes long enough, it will throw male flowers. Not many folks are doing this anymore.

AK47 will do that. But it's a long time till it does. And colloidal is so easy to make.

Did anyone else know you only need the silver wire on the positive terminal? So if you have 2, you could double it up on the +.

Not sure what you'd use for the other terminal, but as long as it's metal and doesn't dissolve in water, should be ok.

You can greatly speed up colloidal by doing it in a 150ml beaker, enough for a little amber sprayer from ebay. The balls form at the rate of the current, so less water means faster finishing time.

Also, NEVER store colloidal in the fridge. That leads to agglomeration. A silver fuzz forms on the bottom and the stuff is too weak to turn plants inside a few weeks.

So question. If I spray only part of a fem plant will only that part turn male, while the rest of the plant stays female? therefore able to knock herself up? I am already creating some F1's with old school M:F breeding, but am looking to work with some female clones to get that line dialed in.
