self Sufficient grow shed

i am in the process of going self Sufficient in my shed.
i am building a wind turbine/generator which will charge a bank of batteries in my other shed which comprises of 10 12v wagon/truck batteries which will then have a 600watt inverter which will power my lighting in my grow shed
i will keep everyone posted on my progress and post pictures as soon as its ready..

man, if i had money to blow... this is the way i would do it. i'd love to take a whole house off the grid and just care-less about power consumption. not having to pay an electric bill would be great. i just got mine in the mail today and wasn't too happy. 350 bucks aint the end of the world, specially when the previous residents spent about 1000 dollars this same time last year. i dropped about 200+ on insulation when i moved in... and only keep 2 rooms in the entire house climate controlled.

just installed the wind turbine and found that the blades are fouling the main post so down it comes again

You should have a solar panel on the roof, in addition to the turbine, so you'll be more likely to be able to get a constant flow of power and won't be dependant on wind alone. Also, have more bateries than you'll need to power your lights. You might be windless on a cloudy day and you will still need power.

But how did you build the wind turbine? Or did you just buy it?

i will get a solar panel at some point
i built the wind turbine myself out of a car alternator ( generator USA ) very simple
there are alot of websites showing u how to construct one

solar panels are expensive to set up initially. about $20,000 for a house with 10 panels and will give you about 2000 to 2400 watts as long as the sun is shining. it needs to be tied in with your electric coming in from utilities power. and if you went away on vacation and didnt use any electric, then the solar panels would make your meter run backwards. you would be selling it back to power company.
also you can get state and federal grants and in the end the system would cost about $12,000.

i am going to stick with the wind turbine option for the time being and maybe when i can afford it i will go for solar panels

Hey great idea bud

Im buying a cannal boat soon, and was planning on growing on the move but the amount of time a grow takes you gotta make sure you got that power source nailed, as a couple of errors can cost you dearly

i am going to see if i can get ahold of some more batterys then i will have more storage.
but where i am i`m in a valley thats windy most of the time
i`d say 4 out of 7 days its windy like 20 - 25mph

ive just set the post into concrete today at 6` high and will be mounting the turbine tomorrow
yesterday i made 3 new blades for it out of pvc drain pipe which are 3` long and work like a dream

yeh the blades are bolted to the alternator off a 1995 renault clio 1.9 diesel its a 70amp one so powerful-ish lol
all i have 2 do now is mount it properly to the pole and wire it up then i`m sorted

Thats some cool shit, my bro is buying a cannal boat, so we will prob build one, got a few alternators lying arround, one off a BMW that would do good, thanks for posting pics looks great

yeh no probs if u look on reuk.co.uk you will find loads and i mean loads of info on what to do
wiring is the main problem with alternators lol
all i did was emailed lucas who made the alternator and asked them for a wiring diagram and info on how to wire it up as a wind turbine
i will post some more pictures soon
