As stated...........not enough direct sun light i believe is your issue as i have had the same thing with some plants tossed out doors.They did just like yours,getting around 4-5 hrs of direct sun with tree branches getting in the way here an there.

2x2's are light and sturdy enough to give ya a strong little grow box. Do ya have a home depot and how much $ you wanna spend?
