OFFICIAL CMH THREAD! (Post Your Ceramic Metal Halide Grows, ?'s & Experiences Here!)

What I really want to know is how many watts does a 1000w ballast pull whilst running an 830w bulb?

How Many People Still Use Magnetic Ballasts?

I'm really interested in this bulb, but I was wondering about the difference in wattage between the bulb and ballast. Does running an 830w bulb on a single 1000w ballast draw the same as running a 1000w bulb on a single 1000w ballast?

Chlorophyll utilization of bulb spectrums, CMH & HPS.

Not entirely true. Plants will grow under lights that put out almost entirely green and/or yellow light. The absorption and utilization is fairly inefficient, but more green or yellow light will still produce more growth. That's why HPS bulbs are even capable of being used as grow bulbs at all...

Chlorophyll utilization of bulb spectrums, CMH & HPS.

Plants do use green light, though much less efficiently compared to blue/red light. Plants also use yellow light very inefficiently, which is like 60-80% of the light put off by an HPS. A much lower percentage of CMH bulbs is green. The specs suggest that they actually put out more than either...

Chlorophyll utilization of bulb spectrums, CMH & HPS.

Did this cross comparison of charts of bulb spectrum (Philips MasterColor CMH, Generic HPS) against chlorophyll absorption rates. It seems to me that HPS bulbs are completely unsuitable as grow bulbs. Yeah, they produce a LOT of yellow/orange light, which falls directly into the area of the...

    Led Users Unite!

Seems like this thread probably has a lot of good information...somewhere...too bad there's over 500 pages to look through. I'm trying to find general information on LED grow lights: the models that are available, the differences between them, what the most efficient single LED modules are, etc...

    Light Penetration

Does the same PAR output from bulbs of different wattage result in different depths of light penetration? I've seen a lot of people on various forums post that 1000w HPS bulbs penetrate better than 600w HPS bulbs, and that HIDs penetrate further than T5s in general. I haven't found any other...

    1000w vs. 600w

I think I should rephrase the question: Is there any scientific evidence or information which shows that 1000w bulbs do/would do better than 600w bulbs per watt? I can't find any. Everything I can find points towards 600w bulbs doing better per watt.

    1000w vs. 600w

Wasn't talking about heat issues. That isn't so much the bulb as the system it's put into. With proper setup light bleaching would be an issue long before heat.

    1000w vs. 600w

The comparison is not 1 bulb vs 1 bulb. It's performance of each using same wattage (6x1000w vs 10x600w). 10x 600w puts out more PAR light than 6x 1000w. I realize what we see is far removed from what a plant "sees." Our eyes adjust to luminosity so that relative brightness is generally pretty...

    1000w vs. 600w

I assume you mean "that's not true." Anyway, I didn't say it's all the difficult to get a 1000w very close to plants, just saying it's difficult than with a 600w, due to more heat per watt and more light/heat coming out of a similar sized piece of glass making more drastic differences in light...

    1000w vs. 600w

It's actually harder to get 1000w bulbs close enough to the canopy. They produce more heat per watt than 600w bulbs. And they concentrate light more heavily, which makes even lighting more more difficult and makes burning parts of your canopy easier.

    1000w vs. 600w

LOL, yeah, more light is better than less light, for sure. i don't think that's what was up for debate. obviously 1x 1000w would do better than 1x 600w.............................................................................................................................................

    1000w vs. 600w

2x 600w in a dual bulb reflector would more than match the output. Would be 35000 more lumens for only 200w more power. So I could say the same thing except in reverse. 1x 600w HPS & 1x 600w MH would be even better; 20,000 less lumens (still 15,000 more than a 1000w), but much improved spectrum...

Is this a good blueprint or fail?

Lumens are not how we see light. How we see light is entirely subjective: 1 lumen can easily appear as bright as 10 lumens once one's eyes have adjusted. Lumens is the [objective] measurement of how much visible spectrum electromagnetic radiation a source emits. The photosynthetic spectrum...

Is this a good blueprint or fail?

Stick with the 600s and I don't see why not. At 1 gpw thats 2400grams, or 5.357 lbs. You need a lb every week, so with 8 week flowering strains you need 0.75 gpw. There's no reason you should pull less than 0.5 gpw if you're putting even minimal effort into your op. 0.75 gpw isn't that lofty a...

Is this a good blueprint or fail?

So you're saying that with less lumens you'd get more yield.. How exactly does that work? 95000x4 = 380000 [2400 watts] 155000x2 = 310000 [2000 watts] An extra 70,000 lumens for only 400 watts, why would anyone go with the 1000s? You can even mix in an enhanced spectrum metal halide or two...

    1000w vs. 600w

In every thread I read comparing 600w HIDs and 1000w HIDs I see a ton of people repeating "The 1000w is better because of penetration." I was wondering exactly what this meant? Why would a 1000w concentrated onto an area 1.66x as large as the area a 600w is concentrated onto penetrate any...

    ReVolt Ballasts, Anyone use them??

I got the 600w deluxe kit with large reflector. The first package was missing the ballast for some reason, but I called and they sent another right away which I got in another week. It all works perfectly.

Trimming Fan Leaves a Consensus Part 1

Original growing conditions? What does that mean? The growing conditions of the breeding rooms? It'd be pretty hard to know the conditions of the breeding rooms for every strain that was bred into any particular strain, therefore impossible to know the best conditions without experimentation...
