12 days of germinating and two survived

I started germinating five seeds on Nov 15[SUP]th[/SUP] but had to leave town due to an emergency and didn’t return until Nov 27[SUP]th[/SUP]. Two of the seeds survived but were in bad shape, as their roots were about 6 inches long and all curled up. They were sprouted but the pod leaves were yellow and sickly. I placed them in soil and into the grow room…. in about 3 days they were healthy.

My first grow was this summer, indoors with sunlight, dirt, tap water and no nutes, which yielded 18 grams of great tasting buds…. this is my first CFL grow.

  • 4 socket vanity lamp with splitters, with eight 23W CFL’s - four 6500K, two 2700K, two 5000K
  • PC fan, timer, emergency blanket, homemade reflector, and various hardware.
  • Assorted seeds, Dutch potting soil, 2-gallon pots, MG 24-8-16, pH ~6.5, temp 70-88F, RH ~30%

Questions:

  • Where should the thermometer be placed? When on the soil it reads in the 80’s but around 70’ish near the base of the pots...see PICs
  • I have extra 2700K & 6500K bulbs, are the 5000K of value or should I replace them?
  • I know Miracle Grow is crap....I hear Fox Farm is great, any recomendations/comments?

PIC's of my previous indoor gal, then the man cave where I can smoke cigars and bud, drink beer and fart as I please...then the closet c/w babies.

yes sunlight only.... from the bay windows in my livingroom, with Dutch potting soil and tap water and zero nutes.

It would only get direct sun from 3pm to 9pm, which of course reduced as fall approached. I would bring it into a dark room from 9pm to 7am which was enought to getting her budding...

I'm thrilled with the results (for the money & effort spent), and it has a unique flavour I can't describe, with a clean buzz (most trichromes were milky, very few amber).

I'm going to try agian next year but I can't wait, so that's why I started this CFL closet grow.

Damn, I'm going to give that shit a try.

I had an idea of doing auto flowers in my bathroom window which during the summer can get as much as 8 hours of direct sunlight, from about 11am. But in the end I thought it would be a stupid idea, but now I'm actually going to do it.

+rep for that, that's intense.

hsfkush, thanks for your feedback.....hell yes, give it a try as the investment is small for the rewards.

Next spring I'm going to try an experment using a combination of sunlight & CFL's...start with 3 similar seedlings, one gets sun only, one with CFL only, and another gets a combo of sun & CFL...see which one does the best

I think my gal may have been an auto-flower (my guess is Critical plus) because it flowered with only 10 hours of darkness per night.

4 days later pics…the right one seems to be growing much faster than the left….I was hoping for more.

My CFL closet is within a room with no heat and open windows, so the bedroom temp is about 50-60F (10-15C), thus I’m worried the plants are getting too cold at nights…opinions?

Since the bedroom is so cool, I have no issues with overheating, if fact if I leave the closet door too far open it will drop the temp near the pot bases to about 65F. Therefore I leave the door just open a few inches and the temp stays at around 72F (22C) and about 84F (30C) near the soil and plant.

The RH was at 30%, so I added a humidifier (during light hours) which has increased the RH to 40-45%, and it provides a bit more air circulation but it’s noisy and cumbersome.

You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads!

Now evidently my cycloptic colleague informs me that that cannot be done.

Ah, would you remind me what I pay you people for, honestly?

Throw me a bone here!

Dr Evil

PS: Come on folks, a little feedback please!

My plants are about 1 month old now, they seem to be healthy but not growing as fast as I would have thought.

I swapped the two 5000K for 6500K, so I'm now running six 23W 6500K & two 23W 2700K

I've been using 1/3 strenght MG, but giving them pure water (~ 6.5 pH) every second watering.

I'm considering transplanting them into a bigger pots but am not sure if/when I should....feedback would be welcomed

What a great story! Giving me hope to maybe get something finally popin' for me in the seed department. So far I've been dealing with a curse.
Grow looks good thou, and that indoor sunlight girl of yours was cool to see, + REP for that!
I'll keep my eyes on your grow, my first CFL grow used the same sort of lighting set-up and had great results!

Many thanks for your feedback D.tea.....just as my first grow, I'll be happy with whatever amount of bud I get....for me this is just a fun hobby that hopefully pays off with a wee bit of lovely smoke :)

I never really can tell with pictures very well, but your one plant looks like its in the position to be stretched out because of the lights having to be far enough for the larger plant, perhaps raising the pot to account for this would be some sound advice you might overlook.

If I helped, bongsmilie to that, otherwise perhaps your looking for that maybe a bit of LST and get the light all up on them gals. Either way, pics look great and lovin' the eagerness and enthusiasm.

Nice sun PLANT!! I wish I lived in a more southerly climate..seems like we loose more sun every year regardless of the season. I am around the 49th north.

REPOTTING...I think if they were mine I would wait a bit, maybe another week or so, let those roots get established a little more. Just a thought, in a cool room like that the root growth may be a little slower than average. I am sure you well know how much a PITA it is to repot out of those little clay pots..well it is for me anyway. Nice happy little seedlings though.

I am curious why the switch from MG? I have had good luck with it as long as it is used in half to third strength. Someone tried to sell me a bag of bat crap for 17 bux..this is where I drew the line.. Yes it is good stuff, but if I want bat poo, I'll go find a bat cave.. I digress. MG is cheap.. Cheap+poor= good? I do supplement 0-10-10 fish juice for the bloom though.

Flip over to my journal and check out the 6500K fixture/wardrobe box starter/cloner I put together, I have high hopes for the fixture, it is a 65W/6500K outdoor light. It's basically a cvlinder style light that is flattened out. The box believe it or not does well to keep the temps under control..from getting too chilly. I have some pretty crazy temp swings in my basement. A person could take it a step further..which i intend..by lining it with the 5 dolla per sheet foil backed foam rigid insulation. Shiney side out of course.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm in the lower mainland, close to the 49th, it was a shity June/July but August/Sept helped out big time.

I've just heard so much negitive feedback on MG....I've had no issues but thought I would go with a more canabis friendly nute

Yeah, the left one is really short and spread out.....I have it on top of a cigar box to give it a bit more height, maybe I'll increase it a bit more.

As for LST....just not sure if I understand it well enough to try...this is my first CFL grow and the learning curve is rather steep.

I think MG gets a bad rep for residual salts left behind. And I do notice salt or maybe scale around the plastics. I am going to keep it in play for now but at low doses. I am really thinking my 3 gallon pots are too small now.. mind you the four I have are reveg, and the one I am showing is the PR and her babies. I might actually have root systems now is my whole point. I was a dumbass just pouring stuff on my plants waiting for them to grow. I took a giant leap yesterday when I bought a decent ph meter and checked the ph as I added concentrates. Real important for any level of micro gardening. Very much so in such a fast maturing plant.

Lo and behold..they like it. I turned the lights back dec 19th on the mama babies still have a month..or two hopefully. I have a few more clones in soil at my mom's that we are going to top, and top.. try to do a low grow in her 30yr old garden spot this spring.
