3x3 8x cxb3590 @ 50w dimmable to 25w?

Hi there. I know the answer for my question is somewhere on forum but I simply cannot find it. Therefore excuse me for making this topic and point me to post explaining what I want to do. Not a native speaker as you can read:)

I would like to make 8 cob cxb3590 fixture on 2 drivers.

I would like to have 400w (8x50w) for flowering dimmed to 200w (8x25w) during veg. Is it possible? Which drivers should I use?

How dimming works? Does it make whole system take less energy or simply dim cobs by wasting energy? (so driver still takes 400w but cobs are lit using 200w? I hope not:)

2-HLG-185H-C1400B drivers will do the trick with 36v cxb

Can I go with A version instead of B for less messing with cables?

also cob efficiency goes up. in other words 8 cobs at 25W is more light than 4 cobs at 50W

400W of cobs in a 3x3 is a lot of light btw, you'll need that dimmer

Still I need to know one thing. Does it take less energy when dimmed (so 200w instead of 400) or simply expels it as a heat (still taking 400w, but sending less to cobs)?

Yes, it uses less energy. If you hookup a kill-a-watt meter to the input of your system, you will see as you dim there will be fewer watts at the wall; less current same voltage, fewer watts. You are saving energy.

it will use half the power and give you 60% of the light compared to 400W

The A model dimmer is not recommended for routine use. An external dimmer is recommended. Not that difficult to stuff it in a little box
