Look what arrived! Also, I decided to flower a bit earlier then expected, so I am throwing them into flower tonight.

I own all three of those books, the top one is going to be the most informative and best explained one you pull from. I have sticky tabs on the pages I found important, and highlighted as I read.

Great read.

The bottom right is similar... but I feel is a lot more basic, like should have a black and yellow cover and "Dummies" in the name... for VERY first timer's.

The grow bible can always come in handy if things need to be dumbed down for me or someone around me. As far as the top one, you are right in it being the most informative!

I am going to order supplemental lighting by getting an apollo 8 LED system, I am currently trying to figure out the spectrum to use but so far I think I am going with
x3 2700k
x3 6000k
x3 4000k (if they have them, or something else Neutral white)
x3 630nm
x3 660nm

This will add around 250 extra watts to my system which is what I am aiming at and for a good price too using epistar LED's. Total shipped is 334

Talk to Slip, we were just chatting about his led he ordered. Here is the thread.

I'm learning about this stuff too and hope to replace my lighting down the road.

I trust he will be a good guide for you if he elects to share his knowledge.

allllright, what are you trying to do with the panel? Give FULL supplement or just your red/blue/white? three(x3, x3..) what- diodes of that peak? Are you just trying to balance the amount of spectra your getting? LED's have the divine beauty and ability to use the EXACT wavelengths you want in the most efficient way possible in today's technology...this shit is really the way of the future...

Coverage wise... what kind of hood are you running? Dimensions? I feel like having multiple sources of supplementing light would be the way to go with a primary HID light source.. having two lights, one led and one HID, will give you that definitive split and difference in quality, potency, density, and structure no matter how much you try to blend the light by angling the sources. (I am a HUGE believer and using rope ratchets or anything else to angle your light source to get the best coverage available.) I had just sent my 9th email back to Astir confirming some things about custom ratio's with their panels and wrapping up my first order from them... I am going to pay out of the nose for shipping, but those panels are IDEAL for supping- look for those qualities in sup led's- compact, efficient, the right nm's, passively cooled, etc.

1. What's your goals with your sup panel? Give more red, blue, or full sup?
2. Think about your total coverage, start drawing on some graph paper- a 400w covers 2.5x2.5, LED covers so on... (unless you are wanting to do more of a "comparison grow")
3. The apollo 6's are sweet... and a bit more efficient when it comes w/$, and would give you multiple sources..
4. Think about your ratios... I am someone that loves the original R/B diodes and ran with GLH Spectra's that bleach like a m'fer... but white led's are taking over.
5. Look further into what the data sheets of these diodes are, ask cidly for charts, specs. AND know what you are looking at. It will take some serious time, but educate yourself, its nothing beyond your spec.

I would personally jump into the LED specific forum and look at DIY threads, or type in DIY LED. And look for ratios of what spectra you are going to want. Then order that.

Think it's along the lines of 60% R, 30% W, 10% B (630nm, 37-4200k, 440nm)

Read up bub.. lol

EDIT: there's just too much... lol

You need to go through and count how many emitters are actually in each "junction" or "housing" of the Apollo panels, multiply it to figure how many to divvy up between each wavelength because they all have to be even in each junction..

Ask them for data and spread sheets of the diodes that they use, look at the graphs.. you want a good Red diode to mainly peak at 630 nm, maybe a secondary peak at 660 or like 410.

then figure out what you want to do with the panel... that'll tell you what white to use- use a majority of that white, then balance it with NW or CW, maybe 8:1, depending on what you are doing..

Thanks for the help! Remember that my grow tent is relatively small so tilting the lights, as I planned and you suggested is at I was aiming at. My floor space is 2 feet by 3 feet so I think I can easily get both lights in with adequate room to cover the entire floor with light while having a sweet spot in the middle covering most the area of both lights if done right. I am aiming at supplementing yes but more so for a all around grow (veg and flower) which is why I'm looking at predominately whites. My hood is about 20 inches in length which leaves enough room for an Apollo 8 or 6

2x3' is my home ground, I rocked a 400 in a Daystar AC in mine for a while, got sick of my fan blowing so much..

It sounnds like you've got the right idea, I am just more of a fan of the A-6's...

I would probably set those puppies up on each side @ a 45-60* angle in towards your hood... but that's just me, I am still emailing with Astir and Area 51 working out some things.. Ill either be getting two AR-90's (2012 series) and angling them at 65* or be getting a couple Astir panels to do exactly what I was saying- stacking em up at 45*, or maybe mounted in the reccessed portion of my cabinet's walls... havnt decided..

lil somethin somethin..

Though he suggests a 5:2:1(R:W:B) instead of 9:2:1, so I spent last night breaking down the %'s of each watt as I've heard this is a more reliable way of going about things. I took %'s for to see what the differences are:

9:2:1- 75% red
7:2:1- 68.75% red
5:2:1- 62.5% red

Thinkin I might go right in between with the 7:2:1, May even go 8:3:1 with two WW and one NW to kind've balance the lack of blue

8:3:1-67% red, 25% white, 8% blue

This is designs for a flower panel, Im not really wanting to overdo it on the blue's, enough to make em happy happy happy.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Ill keep posting links I stumble onto to help every body!
I really suggest delving into the LED threads... follow Petflora, Eraserhead, Hiloreign, and a few others.. they're all very educated on today's tech, especially White's. You'll be able to find percentages like that or I am sure another form of help.

What kind of dry weight are you pulling out of your 2x3'?

This is still my first grow so I am expanding early. Studied for years about it but i've finally taken the time and money to actually put forth the effort to do so, so I am not sure about yield yet.

As far as he A-6's are concerned, are you a fan of them because you prefer to get two of them? Or do you think they are better money wise? The reason I am going with the 8 is because shipping is already about 70 and the 8 is not too much more expensive then the 6, only a total of about 40-50 more so i figured it would be best since I cant afford 2 6's if that is what you were thinking for me. I definitely have been looking into whites from some of those guys and will continue to. Thanks for the advice on that.

lets hope you get exactly what you are looking fro out of your astir or A51

Good and bad news!

Good news is that I have so far 3/5 confirmed females with the other two possibly showing in the coming days, they have shown pistils or pre flowers earlier then expected.

Bad news is there is a Possible spider mite infection so I ordered ladybugs to take care of the problem. What do you think? Do these spots look like it? Other then that, the plants seem to be doing well.

It's hard to tell under the HPS..

I'm only guessing.. either some powdery mildew (if RH is too high)

Or if you've been misting you may have burned the plants from the water droplets??

Congrats on the ladies... I got 3/5 on my grow too..

Good news, the white spots have not spread and seem to be dissipating, so maybe it was nutrient solution. Anywyas, I have ladybugs to take care of anything in case something comes in.

I also am ordering my light tomorrow and going with a apollo 8 with all white LED's to test something new. 4x 3700k, 4x 6000k, 4x 6500k. The reason I went with so much cool is to supplement the HPS with broader blue spectrum.

Subbed!

Looking good so far...

Hows the smell? what are you doing for odor control? and how bad are they stretching? are they fast growers?

I've got a few Cali Boss Hogg freebies from attitude, I'm thinking about sprouting a few next round.

Good luck!

Boss Hog is the shortest with tight internodes, but keep in mind I vegged under Metal Halide to make sure they would be like that. As far as stretching, the NL are starting to but only to get adequate light to each node, they are moreso stretching out like a christmas tree rather than going up and the Boss Hog is fanning out as well. I would go for it, they have been fast at growing even with nute burn a few times (very slight, not enough to stunt or hold them back, more of a warning), I would recommend going for the less is more motto.

The smell so far is very good, not odorous at all at this point, although NL are known for a lack of smell. It is only noticeable in the closet with the fan off unless its been off all day then the room smells. But as for control, I have a 24 inch carbon filter made by phresh hooked up to a 6 inch fan.

And thank you!

Edit: The plant in the bottom right corner is the Boss Hog, it is the smallest because it sprouted about 6-7 days after the rest.

I have a 400 watt light Im trying out for the first time. Have no idea brand or anything. Its was $129 for the kit. Came with the MH bulb & the hps. batwong reflector ect. Was a good price. Never used one before. I used 2 150 watt HPS in a cabinet before.

Anxious to see the results. I have a seed I just cracked under a CFL. gonna leave it there & train it till my NL#5 is done. Im in week 6 of bud so not too long to go. I want to put my new one under the MH bulb for a couple weeks training her & see how the MH bulb works compared to the 200 watt CFL (not 200 watts, comparable it says, but not sure what the actual wattage is. Its a bigsucker)

You should get much more yield and be happier with the 400 compared to the 200 CFl, if it was even 200 CFl as i'm not sure fi you mean 200 comparable to incandescent or what.

Update: We are at 1 month now from the first sprout and things are coming along nicely, I ordered my light and it should be here within 2 weeks, right in time for flowering. I'm still trying to identify the last flower, not sure if its male or female yet, hopefully it will become more prominent in the coming days so I can waste as little light as possible. Any takers on it?

hope I'm wrong, but that definitely looks like male preflowers to me...just my opinion.

It turned out to be a male so I chopped him which leads to 3 females all of which are Northern Lights, so no Boss Hog this grow any longer.
