Well I'm upgrading right now....gonna throw in a mazzei venturi after the inline filter and need to re-insulate the chamber. Should be ready soon.

mazzei venturi is that some aeration device? I suppose its best for longer misting cycles..

Its an attatchment to the pump that uses the suction from inlet to draw air through a smaller opening. It increases the dissolved oxygen content of the reservoir...much greater than air stones. The plus is no more air pumps, or air stones that collect pathogens and root exudates.

I hate to be a bugger, but do you care to share what one you settled upon, or the type? These look really cool. Could it be used as a nute injector, if the intake was regulated? Thanks.

I second that request, I've wanted to try these for a while. For another application, they make them with ultrasonic cavitators, with the venturi design to increase gas-liquid dissolution or rupture cell membranes of something like microalgae. I am trying to find more details anywhere but there is too much piety in propriety.

I'm still looking for one at a good price. These are used as fertilizer injectors and ozone injectors along with simple air injection. The ones I see are $150 plus...

I see what your up to prof wanting a submersible pump and the nozzle doing a recirculating system just keep in mind about heat transfer from that pump sitting in your reservoir. Really consider a regular pump not a submersible and get some bulk head fittings. Reason I say this is I run 3 external pumps running 24-7 with very little heat transfer to my reservoir. my reservoir holds 16 gallons without my chiller running my reservoir temperature stays at room temperature. A danner 950 pump gets very warm to hot running not very long. I use two 950s for topping off and water changes and use them externally.

Well I do have my chiller in an external room so it should keep up with any excess heat from a pump...I'm not concerned about the extra electricity to run the chiller, as long as the water is plenty aerated. Also, with my set-up, I don't have much room to play with inside the chamber and since its all custom built, I don't want to reconfigure for a pump. My rez is 25 gallons so the heat differential may not be very significant. Hell, I'm not worried about an extra 10 bucks a month to run a chiller full time!

My initial set-up was done with all external pumps...but space constrictions forced me to go submersible. And...I may be wrong..but submersible have a better flow rate...thought I read it somewhere and I could be wrong. Also, with external, its also more configuration for my inline filter and venturi. I've experimented with so many parts and plumbings, I just want to simplify at this point. If pump heat issues occur, which I think they won't with a good chiller, I'll reconsider. But great advice though! We both seem to have covered every angle...which is what you need to do in set-ups like this.

Also consider submersible pumps are not pressure rated and you may not get the results you are trying to achieve. A 950 will struggle getting 5 psi with very little flow you will be working a submersible to its limit.

My system is recirculating, with fresh change outs every 7-9 days. With an inline filter though, it keeps everything nice and clean. I thought about doing drain to waste, but the less waste you have, the shorter the feedings. Shorter feedings equals more root growth equals less top growth. If you can get precisely how much a plant needs at x amount of time with y being the variable for environment, then do drain to waste. I personally think the concept is more "waste" than anything because those nutrients can be recycled, but only for a week or so. As long as the water is pristine, filtered, and ph balanced, those nutes can last longer than just being "waste", saving you hard earned money shelling out for top grade pharmaceutical nutes.

What size chiller you running prof? I have a aqualogic 1/3 hp and for me I have to run a 600 gph anything higher and my chiller struggles to cool to much surface area tubes water lines etc. My chiller is also in another room.

After testing nutrient run off from my tubes PPMs are only 150-200 very little nutrient waste.this was tested with timer set for minimum spray to get this reading longer spray times equal higher PPMs run off. Bottom line I agree with drain to waste being over kill....and yes a waste....
