If that were a viable option, I'm sure he would have by now.
There are a thicket of rules and laws from the Federal level down to local ordinances that make this a practical impossibility and any investigation into the subject will leave the impartial observer with the same conclusion.
That suggestion is generally advanced by people who know full well that running as a third party candidate is doomed from the start and in spite of whatever they might say, they really don't want more choices in our electoral system.

If he really views both parties as part of the problem then he should run against both in 2020. I am sure he could create a spark/attract some voters from both sides with some of his policies

FYI: I actually support Bernie at one point with cash donation, 1500 to be exact. It was done 750 twice. Then January came and I started paying closer attention to what he was saying versus his record. Then he got his ass handed to him by Clinton. Bernie has some wonderful IDEAS that would and could help others, but he is still one lazy fuck
