they pass this law under the gise of "seeks to make consumers bear the brunt of clean up costs for the bags". dont consumers already pay to have their trash taken out? of course they do.

the only reason they do this is to steal from you. there will be no difference in the landfill that is used, where the bags go, how they are handled...nope nothing. now they will just sit back and collect there nickel.

and anickel sounds insignificant. judging by the fact when i go for groceries i usually have about 20 of those bags, that money will add up in a hurry.

not to even mention that the grocery store now has to carry bigger, more expensive bags (will be passed on with grocery bill) but many stores will have to completely redo their isles to accomodate other bulkier type bags. guess who will bear the cost of that? yep consumers YOU.

now for all you do gooders who believe evertime a plastic bag leaves a store a dolphin dies, who do you think this nickel is going to hurt the most? yes, the POOR PEOPLE YOU CLAIM TO LOVE.

thank God there are no poor people in wahsington dc.

i have seen the enemy....and he resides in our govt buildings. thanks for nothing big brother....

To prepare for the change, the city government has distributed some 122,000 reusable shopping bags to elderly and low-income residents who complain that their limited spending power will be further hampered by the levy.
great! they are really helping these people huh? wpw, they gave em a bag. wow, what a bunch of nice guys that govt is. or when the bags wear out? or when they need more than one, which will be everytime they go to the grocery store. and what do you propose they do with the other 460,000 residence?

you are falling for their reasoning hook line and sinker. you must love paying people for doing nothing.

dont worry ginja, most people get it. you, i am afraid, will always be ignorant.

as i live somewhere that charges for bags i can say that the poor are still able to eat and the ones that really dont want to pay for the bags
the government dont actualy want your money on this they would be much happier for people to use their own bags...

you daily rants are pretty amusing but you really do need a bit of perspective in you life i get the idea your veiw is incredibly narrow...

so where you live, the poor are doing just fine? really? you should let them know. they probably disagree with you.

the govt doesnt want your money? really? no, they are here to HELP you.

please ginja, dont ever stop posting. your views of reality are a shining jewel of collosal ignorance. and it helps make my points brilliantly clear for thinking poeple.

so if you wish, how about explaining to everyone how charging poor people a nickel per bag improves their lives?

on this case they would be much happier if you just used your own bag. with a tiny bit of fore thought you'd manage to take your own..

as to where i live well im slap bang in the middle of the "poor" area im a single dad and i still manage to feed myself and kid even if i do take my own bags to the shops......

well try this out.

instead of being OKAY with the govt making groceries more expensive by "implementing" (code word stealing) taxes on grocery bags, how about we all tell them to start thinking of ways to make our groceries CHEAPER. novel approach huh?

all these scumbags do is think of ways to "increase revenue" (code word steal from people who are just trying to live and support a family) at the expense of the people who they were supposed to protect...american citizens/consumers.

for instance how would this sound coming from your local politician...."today folks i am announcing that in order to try and help people cope in extrememly difficult economic times, we are going to suspend such ludicrious taxes such as a nickel for a grocery bag." would that be better or worse for poor people trying to eat?

or try this, "hey folks, i really know things are tough out there so instead of proposing new punishing taxes on energy, we are gonna hold the line on taxes so you can afford to drive to work, heat your house, cook your dinner and take your kids to their soccer game". do you think that will help or hurt poor people?

you think that ridiculous, out of control taxes somehow make your life better. they dont. if you still think it does, explain how making you pay 5 cents per bag improves your life. it only increases the power of the politician over your life and makes you have to work harder for less. your power/freedom as an individual is directly proportional to your ability to make a living. as it gets harder to make a living, you lose freedom. please ginja, wake up to what is going on.

So let's see ... The city distributes 122,000 reusable bags. OK, looks good on the surface, that's for sure. Now, consider how the city obtained the bags. Were they donated or did the city have to buy them?

If donated, there were 122,000 bags that were not sold to a private entity and no capital was generated to keep the engine of prosperity moving forward. If the engine of prosperity is shut down, the poor can't work due to lack of jobs.

If the city bought the bags, they were bought with tax money. That would be money that would have been put back into the economy to generate private wealth. That wealth would have fed the engine of prosperity ... and created jobs for the poor.

As taxes are taken out of society, prices of goods and services have to be raised. That rise in prices hits the poor the hardest.

If the Progressives will just stop stifling the poor by creating among them an entitlement mentality, and stop making the poor dwellers on the State/Federal Plantation, they will be better off, as would be the rest of us.

Bottom line: The government has no business in the bag business.

lol jeffs original arugement wasnt that but i recon i can answer this one.

so your veiw is that the free bags would hurt the economy.... seriously if the economy is actually that weak then im properly surprised that the grocery shops even have any food at all in them??

and the entitlement part its just a free bag lol heres how i see it going down...

"honey how was your day at work?"
"man it sucks on minimum wage dear"
"but honey you havent seen we got a FREE BAG from the government"
*wipes a lone tear from his eye* "wow darling we're finally there i'll phone my boss and quit right now, with this bag we no longer have to worry"

i see plastic bags as an environmental nightmare (note not connected to AGW)
i have got no problem sourcing my own bags even at the local supermarket you can get double club points for using your own bag. the only people that this costs extra money to is the people who cant be arsed taking their own bags..

as i've grown up i've learnt the true cost of living and its alot more than i had first imagined...
us humans are very young when it comes to the life we're living and we are still finding out the true cost of us being here...

im willing to pay for myself even if the cost is as simple as reusing bags....
whats your excuse for shirking your part of the bill?

You people really want your tinfoil hat flipped?

This is not about your money like you seem to think!

This is about (GASP) social directing!

They want to curb your use of plastic bags by making them more expensive to get people to seek out alternatives. And if they choose (like me) to say screw it and pay the buck for 20 plastic bags they use to stuff the $200 of groceries in then so be it, they are paying for their mess.

But hey why try to have society find newer better ways to do things. All in the name of leaving you all to your own devises right, we should stop trying to move forward because you all may get scared and cry foul all the time like you are doing now, and will always do until it is something that you accidently understand the dangers of.
