Big brother bait and switch

Money is what things come down to. If it didn't cost so much to clean up the mess there would be no reason to do this, and at that point if they slapped a tax on it I would be right there with you. But if this helps to get us off of having to wrap everything in plastic it is a good step to cutting future costs.

If by charging 5 cents a bag, vs the costs of cleaning up the bags which not only go into the ground, but also storm drains that back up and cause property damage, but what happens when they break down (not totally, plastic sucks this way). Plastic breaks down into very tiny almost dust like particles that get into everything we need, water, animals, the chemicals can get into the plants, ect. So we are all ingesting the plastic chemicals from time to time.

It costs more to recycle those bags than it does to make them so in the end it is better to just come up with a new way to take home groceries/all the other crap that we stuff into them.

So instead of just banning them, the 5 cents allows for more money to go to the clean up efforts, and hopefully more to help us get away from all this plastic we consume.

Think about how much plastic waste we have. Do we really need a pair of scissors to come in about 3x larger impossible to open up plastic packaging?

And if they are poor they can get a free canvas bag. So the people that cannot afford it are looked after.

So really what is the big deal?
The irony is you already need a pair to get into the new pair. New razors are the same, my son got a torch for xmas and we couldnt get into it for 10 mins due to the round mould of it!! I hate plastic, everywhere I go in my car (I live in a rural area) and have to stop at junctions I see plastic on the sides of the roads. Not only is plastic an issue, the fact that people just throw things out of there car windows really pisses me off. I think people that drop litter should get community service picking up litter, maybe then they would respect the country they live in..morons.:-(

we should make littering illegal....that will stop it...

You people really want your tinfoil hat flipped?

This is not about your money like you seem to think!

This is about (GASP) social directing!

They want to curb your use of plastic bags by making them more expensive to get people to seek out alternatives. And if they choose (like me) to say screw it and pay the buck for 20 plastic bags they use to stuff the $200 of groceries in then so be it, they are paying for their mess.

But hey why try to have society find newer better ways to do things. All in the name of leaving you all to your own devises right, we should stop trying to move forward because you all may get scared and cry foul all the time like you are doing now, and will always do until it is something that you accidently understand the dangers of.

I don't think its Moving forward at all.

I don't care how the govt. packages any economic program ... in the end ... the consumer pays.

Raise corporate taxes? The consumer pays them.
Raise taxes on Big Oil? The consumer pays them.

All govt. programs end up costing the consumer. They funnel the taxes at the points of LEAST resistance using class envy and warfare, but in the end the consumer pays every cent. All taxes are PASSED along to the end user, every time.

It's a con job, and I am amazed at how many fall for it ... every time.

They wouldn't use class envy if there wasn't enough ppl wanting to be envious.

Bags are five cents each up here... Its a good law. Why? Because now NOBODY uses bags, they all have reusable bags. I used to have hundreds of the fucking things, for no reason at all. I mean sure id use some once in awhile for stuff but they always sit around.

not better if you own a company and employ people to make plastic bags. not good if your groceries cost more either.

i love those bags. i use them instead of buying trash bags for my small trashcans. what are your grocery bags made from? how about your trash bags? what about the container your toothbrush comes in? or your shampoo? or your G2 drink? what do they pack your lunchmeat in? how about your bread? chips? crackers? your milk? yogurt? sourcream? pack of steaks?

so you go to the grocery store and buy 400 things all packed in plastic but that 5 cent bag is the destruction of the world?

charging people for bags isnt going to do shit for the environment. its a con job to get a nickel from people. once people stop using the bags, statists will work tirelessly to find something else to make up the nickel. dont beleive me? stay tuned....

We bought a dozen of those reusable bags from Walmart. Turned out they were great for other things besides groceries, we now have them all over the house and garage holding some of our "stuff". Now we are back to the plastic ones, go figure. It's called, "the path of least resistance" or laziness if one insists.

What do you mean your going to tax my horse for shitting on the street? I don't care if there are cars now and cleaning up horseshit costs you money, this is america damnit, your stealing my freedom!

What about all those horse saddle makers, whip makers, shit cleaners, and blacksmiths that lost their jobs because of the move from horses to autos?

I mean we use horses for everything, and now that you have something better I am just supposed to use it?

Your argument is old and tired Jeff. It has been around for every technological revolution.

Getting away from plastic bags is a very easy step to take to unload us of all the plastic you have just mentioned (which funny enough didn't you give me shit for pointing out to you a few posts ago), and start to use packaging on household goods that can be recycled or naturally breaks down.

again, you think the govt charging you for plastic is saving the world or somehow advancing technology. you use a kazzillion pounds of plastic per year. there isnt an alternative YET.

so they pretend to be saving the world by charging YOU ans YOUR children for bags. and you go right along....lockstep.

go back to the beginning of this whole thread...bait and switch. they are baiting you "your gonna save the planet" and charging you 5 cents so you "dont use plastic". its absurd.

if it was technological advancement fine, i love technology. but this has nothing to do with technology and everythinng to do with getting their statist hands on your money.

if it wasnt about money they would offer an alternative and reward you for using it. that isnt what they are doing.

and to boot, they do it in the city with the highest child poverty rate among cities in the US....go look it up. do this in the hamptons, san fran, upper east side? okay maybe you could make the argument they are trying to cut down on plastic. i dont buy it but hey, i can at least see how you could make the argument. do it in DC, its stealing from poor people to give it to pieces of shit politicians.

give me just one thing that this is gonna do to ease the poverty among the children of DC. just one, a single thing that this will do to make those poor kids who live in the projects life better by charging them for bags.

you lack insight as to what is really going on.

now here is where you reply with something real insightful like, "i cant believe you are such an asshole jeff, you are the root of all evil". but you definitely wont respond to how this improves the life of an impverished kid.

If they did not give out canvas bags to the people that need it you may have a point, but since they are you have no point in your altruistic view about saving the children.

And if you looked for a couple minutes you would find there are plenty of alternatives to using plastic, but because we are set up for being a plastic society the change is hard to come.

We are not lucky enough to have this perfectly timed so that new better technologies are already coming out on mass, because plastic is so damn cheap to manufacture. Even if it is hella costly in the end for us to deal with.

Because the companies that produce and use it have no incentive to change to the new ways that things can be done they won't.

See when I look at this issue, I see the cost of plastic from beginning to end, it is very cheap in the beginning, but gets more and more expensive as it goes through its use. In the end we cannot really burn it (if you ever burned trash you should know what I mean) on a large scale, it doesn't break down into anything but little plastic dust that infects our soil and water. And so it becomes far more expensive.

It is like you need a hammer to build your house with and going to the dollar store to buy a hammer and saying it is better than buying a real commercial hammer because it is cheaper. It has a use, but it is not the best one for the job, and in the end you have to pay for the real one anyway.

Because the companies that produce and use it have no incentive to change to the new ways that things can be done they won't.

.

why would a company think of a way to put themselves out of business?

it isnt their job to find the alternative, its yours. go discover, invent, whatever and make competition or a better product and people will buy it.

what you are doing, to use your horse analogy, is saying kill all the horses cuz they shit on the street before the car is even invented.

there isnt any advanced technology for plastic none, not a single one. so, until then, you dont eliminate it.

and once again, how is anyones life in DC improved?

let me say this clearly, YOU ARE DODGING THE ISSUE. WHY IS THE GOVT CHARGING POOR PEOPLE FOR BAGS? answer, to steal from them.

nothing altruisitc about me bud. i just dont like to see poor people get fucked in the ass by little do-gooders like you. snot noses who walk around taking poor peoples money and telling them how much good your doing for them.

so tell us all how you improved their life again? oh never mind, you didnt even tell us a first time...
