Bridgelux EB Series Build

First post of 2019, woohoo! Just wanted to share my grow light concept.

I'm in an 8x4 and will be running perpetual, two sets of 4 plants (so 2x 8x2 sections) staggered by a month or so.

My plan is running 9x Bridgelux 4ft. 3000k strips, logarithmic ally spaced bare on an aluminum skeleton - a frame + 2 crossbars where they can be taped for stiffness. This will also serve as the driver mount.
Driver will be HLG-240H-C700A. At 700ma, strips are at 39.1fV, so 9 takes me to 352V. Plus it's an A driver so there's some leeway!
In the middle will sit an HLG35 Red Supplement if they come in stock, or possibly a RapidLED boosterboard. My other tent has CXM22 90cri and I'm addicted to high CRI, and this is my attempt and mimicking that + far red.

4 of these lights in an 8x4 should be quite the sight. Any critique?

It was suggested to me by CHIP GREEN to look into the Bridgelux EB series, so being the dutiful sort, I did. I've read all I can find on them, and I have to say I'm impressed.
I would run them at 700 milliamps, as that is the output of the drivers I have scavenged from street light poles. At that amperage they do NOT require any sort of heatsink. (Big Plus)
I do wish I could locate them at a lower temperature than the 3500k, I will be adding these to the 5000k light modules that were used in the street lights.
Is there a place that has warmer temp EB's? I've only tried Digikey and Arrow. (and Google)
Any input welcome.

Gen-3 are in production so availability of the Gen 2 is dwindling, but the prices are reduced.

I'm running the gen2 @ ~600mA mounted to press-board.
Great veg lights. I have not flowered with them alone but do have a few in the flower room as supplementation because the 5000K makes things look pretty.

Price break @ digikey puts 100x @ ~$2.5/ea
I haven't checked arrow, but that's about a third less than what I paid for mine.

The gen3 costs are a bit high for my liking while gen2 are still available.

I like that they made them a tad longer and not as wide. The gen 1 and 2s are 24mm wide. 280,560,and 1120mm length. The gen 3s are 340, 590, and 1190mm lengths. Other than offering 90cri theres not much difference. They did drop the voltage to 12+- volts on gen 3s 390mm length ones.. But all the 90cri models are less efficient than the 80cri. Not alot but when you go using 20+ strips on a light it adds up. I dont think 90cri gen 3s are worth buying. Imo. They did up the max mA to 1700mA on all three strips. But I'd bet the sweet spot is still about the same spot. 1050ish

Keep in mind, those are the short ones, 280mm or 11". Here's whats left at Digikey......

I thought you were using 90cri on your builds, am i mistaken? If you are using 90cri, why would u not recommend eb gen 3 90cri?

I think hes just saying the 80 cri are more efficient than the 90s and on big fixtures it adds up and it seems the new gen 3s ran at similar MA is not gonna show enough improvement over the much cheaper gen 2s at the new price to be worth it.

Im not sure he used 90s on @tman42 build? maybe he can shed some light on it.

For some reason i thought he used a mixed spectrum but all 80cri?

Im baked tho and could easily be remembering wrong lol

Hmm, I thought he used the j series 90 cri, i think im wrong about that.
I dont think there was any eb gen 2 in 90 cri.
For me the choice is between the j series 90cri and the new eb gen 3 90cri. I have a buddy waiting for a quote on the eb 3 90 cri from digikey.

I use a mix of both. Or whatever the person wants. But I wouldnt use all EB gen 3 90 cri on a big light. That has alot of strips. Bc the 80cri are more efficient. Which adds up when losing out 20lm per watt on 20-30 strips. But for smaller builds all 90cri would be ok. The j series strips are completely different. They are 48v rated 200lm/w which is a made up number. They didnt test that good.

I have flowered under 70,80, and 90cri. I have found mixing 80 and 90s like you did the best bang for your buck. Using all 90s you'll get more stretch at onset of flower. But shave 2-3 days off of flowering. 90s in 3k have more red than 3k 80s. In my experience. Mixing them you get the best of both worlds. My best flowering light I have built. Is a mix of ( 8 ) 3k 90s and ( 8 )3k 80s, and (4) 4k 90s. With (60)660nm and(60) 672nm. And (20) 450nm royal blues.

Edit: that's 8 strips of each 4 strips of 4k. And the 60 number is 60 diodes of each. Not 60 strips. And 20 diodes of 450nm. They are all seperate channels. Control individually.

The 670nm interests me. Can i ask which diodes you ended up using for 670nm, and where you sourced them?

You can get them all kinds of places. I got mine from digikey. And had a buddy that soldered them in for me here local. He has small oven he does stuff with. But you can get cree 3up stars to do the samething. Ledsupply.com has them in every color amber, green, reb, blue, uv, tons of them.

Not wanting to go from driver to each strip I remember seeing another way (wire like series but + to +)?

I've found most places to be pretty similar in price when it comes to drivers. I just ordered a kit with a 120w lm301b board, heatsink, hlg-120-45b driver, dimmer and hanging hardware for $163 CAD and free shipping. We'll see how that goes.
