Build Your Own Metal Halide Light Fixture

If you can get the parts needed for a good price, following these instructions will enable you to produce affordable metal halide fixtures. Once you understand how to make a metal halide unit you can substitute the ballast to make a high pressure sodium grow light.
You can greatly increase the efficiency of your light by getting a pre-made reflector made for growing plants. Prices start at about $40. If you use one, your light system will look and preform like a real grow light. Some reflectors come with an unswitched mogul base socket assembly (where the bulb screws in) included.
If you are going to build the light described below and money is too tight to think of getting a reflector now, you can always get one later. Just remove the mogul socket assembly from the old reflector and screw it into a new reflector (when you can afford to get one).
If you are going to buy a pre-made reflector, the only things you will need are a ballast, a bulb (must be the same wattage and type as that specified on the ballast), an extension cord, and an unswitched mogul base socket assembly.

Shopping List:
1 metal halide ballast
1 metal halide bulb (must be same wattage as ballast)
1 heavy duty extension cord (15A)
1 unswitched mogul base socket assembly
1 stove pipe end cap - 5"
3 stove pipe reducers - 1 each of - 8" to 7"- 7" to 6" - 6" to 5"
1 rubber grommet
3 wire nuts

Prepare the end cap:
Drill a wire hole, mogul base mounting holes, ventilation holes and the ground wire screw hole. Install the rubber grommet around the wire access hole.

Ballast Wiring:
Take the male end (the end that plugs into the wall) of the extension cord and figure out how long it is from wall outlet it plugs into to where the ballast will be, length should be 15 feet or less.
Then cut the extension cord and bare the three extension cord wires and the three useful wires from the ballast. The fourth ballast wire is for 227V and remains unused.
Connect the wires as described by the ballast diagram (comes with ballast - usually affixed to the ballast itself). Be sure to utilize the ground wire. This will necessitate the use of a three prong timer and a GFCI for complete safety.
Cut a length of wire from the female end of the extension cord. This will go from the ballast to the unswitched mogul base socket wiring, length should be 15 feet or less. Wire one end to the ballast output. The other end will be wired to the mogul base socket. The female plug on the extension cord is not used.

Mogul Base Socket Wiring:
Feed the socket wires through the grommeted wire access hole on the top of the end cap. Connect appropriately and be sure to use the ground wire. Secure the mogul base socket to the end cap with the socket bolts and provided nuts.
An unswitched mogul base socket assembly will work with standard metal halide and high pressure sodium bulbs.

Stove Pipe Assembly:
Using metal screws join the three stove pipe reducers and top off with the end cap/socket assembly.

Final Check:
Double check the wiring and plug the ballast into an outlet. Within less than a minute the MH should be glowing brightly, but don't expect it to spark right away. Cold bulbs will require a 30 to 45 second delay. If you did everything right it should look like this.

...putting a ballast together is cake, there are only three parts, a transformer, an igniter and a capacitor so if you can read and follow a simple wiring diagram then it's no big whoop.

...here's a couple that i stripped out of a couple 150 HPS Vaportight fixtures a couple years ago and then a 400HPS S51 that i bought as a kit to power a 400CMH.

...and if you go vert there is no need of any kind for reflector.

Hey bro, what's going on? Everything good your way I hope!? Haha! Good info! I know the "basics" of wiring up things, such as ballasts! But last year I was doing this exact damn thing, & ended up getting knocked on my ass!! Lol ;) Damn that was a awful feeling!! Anyways bro, I am sure glad I seen your post!! I have a/my grows going in my journals, and if you take a gander on it, you'll see where I was talking about moving my grows from the wifes "bathroom", lol to a outdoor building I plan on purchasing here in a week or so!! I am going to be decking it out!! Doing soil grows in there aswell as DWC "hydro" grows! ;) I plan on doing video's & taking pictures & posting the entire setup & grows in my journals, and updating everyday!! And I plan on putting a seperate breaker box out there. I have been kinda flipped out about messing with wiring up shit now, because of the whole ballast shit that happen last year!! Anyways, I know I will be needing help doing the wiring out there! And if your around in a week or so, I would really, really apperciate it if you wouldn't mind helping a fellow grower out such as myself!?? I also will be adding more lighting to go along with my 800watt LED system, & my HPS & MH 1000watt systems! Haha.. the wife made a deal with me. That if I get my "jungle" outta her bathroom, she will give me either 600 to 800$ to beaf up my grow!! So I was going to get the extra lighting, more strains,& the breaker box stuff, along with insulation. I believe I have all the other equipment already to go! Just waiting on the income tax!! Then its on... ;) so if you can help me out with the wiring, please let me know..?? Thanks bro.. Your friend, Dank..

Ps.. I. Didn't mean to clutter up your thread bro..

...yeah man, i'll be glad to help if i can but i'm not any kind of expert, i'm just handy and ballast's are easy, lol. ...and what happened to you isn't as uncommon as you might think, for those who don't know it, a capacitor is a dangerous thing and will hold a charge for quite a while so if you short it out, either with wires or your fingers, it discharges immediately, THAT is what stung you.

...anyway, here is a thread on growroom electricals that starts out very basic so is easy to understand and in it you will find many posters who are electricians, aka experts, lol, who will be glad to help you too, Phillthy is a pretty cool cat so he attracts other cool cats, lol.
